About this Artist
Marcus Miller is a world-renowned jazz bassist, composer, and producer, celebrated for his extraordinary contributions to both jazz and R & B for over four decades. As a multi–Grammy Award-winning artist, Miller played a pivotal role in shaping the final chapter of Miles Davis's career. As part of the young musicians who joined Davis's 1980’s comeback band, Miller helped bring the jazz icon out of a seven-year hiatus with a stint that resulted in Man With The Horn, We Want Miles and Star People. Several years later Miller, only 25 at the time, returned to Davis as the mastermind behind the iconic album Tutu, composing, producing, and playing most of the instruments on the album. The title track, written in honor of South African human rights activist Bishop Desmond Tutu, brought Davis once again to the forefront of the music world, pushing jazz in new directions with a modernized sound that used a combination of jazz, funk and electronic production. Tutu is widely considered to be one of the last great artistic statements from Davis before his passing in 1991. Following Tutu, Miller composed and produced Davis's subsequent albums, Siesta and Amandla, each contributing to the innovative sound of Davis's final era.
Miller is also an accomplished solo artist, with 12 Grammy-nominated albums to his name. His 2001 release M2 won the Grammy for Best Contemporary Jazz album. Miller dedicates much of his year to touring with his own band across the globe, connecting with audiences and sharing his passion for music.
Miller is a designated UNESCO Artist for Peace and serves on the Board of Directors for the Hancock Institute and ASCAP. Miller’s talents extend well beyond the concert stage; he is a prolific film scorer and serves as both host and headline performer for the lineup of one-of-a-kind jazz cruises offered by Signature Cruise Experiences. Additionally, Miller shares his insights and love for music through his weekly radio show, MillerTime, which airs every Sunday afternoon on Sirius XM.
