Doris Muñoz

About this Artist

Doris Muñoz is the founder of mija mgmt and Solidarity for Sanctuary and is currently serving as a fellow in Civic Media based at USC's Annenberg Innovation Lab. Muñoz was born in Whittier, CA to a family of undocumented immigrants from Mexico, and was later displaced to live her formative years in San Bernardino, CA. She went on to attend college at Cal State Fullerton graduating with a double Bachelor’s in Theatre and Communications. As a student, she worked booking shows for the university’s Becker Amphitheatre; this experience changed her career path and she made her way through various areas of the music industry working across event production, A&R, touring, and artist management. Seeing the industry’s harmful lack of representation and regard for immigrants and BIPOC, Muñoz was inspired to contribute to creating a new world for her community to thrive in. This is where mija mgmt was born. Founded in February of 2017, mija’s inception came alongside that of Solidarity for Sanctuary in March of 2017 as a call to action in order to raise funds for her parents' legal fees to protect them from deportation and redirect their path to citizenship.

These organizations act as a space to launch first generation artists’ careers and build the bridge between art and activism across the country via concerts that raise awareness and funds for immigrant focused non-profits. Most specifically the Selena for Sanctuary concert series expanded from Los Angeles to New York, bringing artists such as Kali Uchis, Mon Laferte, Cuco, Omar Apollo, Helado Negro, Empress Of and more to stages like Lincoln Center, Central Park, and Grand Park. Her goal is to continue the momentum of the current movement by amplifying the message of the marginalized through leveraging creative partnerships and platforms for social change.
