Johnathan McCullough was recently nominated for a Grammy Award (Best Opera Recording) for his cinematic adaptation of David T. Little’s Soldier Songs. This season, Johnathan will debut with the Lubbock Symphony Orchestra for Madama Butterfly (Prince Yamadori) and The Amarillo Symphony for Carmina Burana.
Last season, he made a string of debuts: Intermountain Opera Bozeman for Il barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro), Tulsa Opera for Gianni Schicchi (Marco), and Portland Opera for The Central Park Five (The Masque). Additional engagements included a return to Opera Theatre of Saint Louis for The Magic Flute (Papageno) and The Funny Bone with Lyric Fest.
Recent engagements included a return to Wolf Trap Opera for Bologne’s L’amant anonyme (Ophémon) and his U.K. debut at English National Opera in a new production of The Marriage of Figaro (Count Almaviva). He won First Prize in the Gerda Lissner Foundation Song Competition singing Mahler’s Lieder eines fahrenden Gesellen and was selected by Renée Fleming to take part in the Weill Institute Song Studio at Carnegie Hall, where he performed in concert. He will present a solo concert under the Carnegie Hall organization in a future season.
Johnathan made a role/house debut at Opéra de Lausanne in Ariadne auf Naxos (Harlequin), returned to Wolf Trap Opera for Il barbiere di Siviglia (Figaro) and Opera Philadelphia for A Midsummer Night’s Dream (Demetrius), and debuted at Opera San Luis Obispo in Die Zauberflöte (Papageno). As an Emerging Artist at Opera Philadelphia, he sang in the world premiere of Elizabeth Cree (Mr. Greatorex) by Kevin Puts and Mark Campbell, as well as in a new production of Carmen (Moralès). At the Komische Oper Berlin, he returned for a new Calixto Bieto production of Schreker’s Die Gezeichneten after his successful debut in a new production of Rameau’s Zoroastre (Oromasès), conducted by Christian Curnyn. He joined the roster of the Lyric Opera of Chicago for Fellow Travelers (Hawkins Fuller cover) and was a Filene Young Artist at Wolf Trap Opera singing in The Seven Deadly Sins (Brother) and Rigoletto (Marullo). In concert, he sang Carmina Burana with the Boise Philharmonic and the National Chorale at Lincoln Center.
In addition to the standard repertoire, Johnathan is an avid interpreter of new music, working directly with composers Carlisle Floyd, Jennifer Higdon, David T. Little, Lowell Liebermann, Missy Mazzoli, John Musto, Rene Orth, Kevin Puts, Steven Stucky, Eli Villanueva, and many more. He recently made his Carnegie Hall debut singing Berio Sinfonia for 8 solo voices. Other concert appearances include Harris Concert Hall with Harry Bicket, John Musto at Songfest, and the Broad Stage in Los Angeles. He received a Bachelor of Music degree, Master of Music in Opera degree, and Artist Diploma, all from the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. He has been a Young Artist at the Glimmerglass Festival, the Opera Theatre of Saint Louis, and the Aspen Music Festival.
