Recognised as "a name to watch“ (The Times, 2023), British-Pakistani soprano Mimi Doulton is fast-establishing herself as a leading interpreter of contemporary scores, with a particular interest in creating new theatrical work. Highlights include premieres of Oliver Leith’s Last Days at the Royal Opera House Linbury Theatre; Bernhard Gander’s ich habe ihn nie getroffen at the Salzburg Taschenopern Festival, conducted by Peter Rundel; Giorgio Battistelli’s Wake with Birmingham Opera Company, directed by Sir Graham Vick; and her debut with the Bamberger Symphoniker as Max in Oliver Knussen’s Where the Wild Things are.
On the concert platform, she has recently made debuts with Birmingham Contemporary Music Group under Vimbayi Kaziboni, and at Sommer in Stuttgart with Ensemble Ascolta, in collaboration with composer and performer Neil Luck. Her debuts at the Southbank Centre and Wigmore Hall both featured the music of Elisabeth Lutyens. Mimi has a keen commitment to commissioning and developing new works; recent commissions by Rasmus Zwicki and Michael Finnissy were broadcast from Spitalfields Festival on BBC Radio 3.
She won second prize at the 2021 John Cage Interpretation Awards, and was a finalist in the 2022 Royal Overseas League Annual Music Competition. In 22/23, she was awarded an Opera Awards Foundation Bursary, the Guildhall Futures Fund, and a residency at Fondation Royaumont. Mimi holds a BMus in Music and Languages from King’s College London and a Masters from the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She is currently based in Stuttgart, Germany. This is her US debut.
