About this Artist

Trumpeter CONTE CANDOLI began his career in the 1940s with Woody Herman’s Thundering Herd, Chubby Jackson, and later with Stan Kenton and his Orchestra. He led his own groups in the Chicago area until 1954, when he moved to Los Angeles and joined the Howard Rumsey’s Lighthouse All Stars. Candoli has since become a fixture in the Southern California jazz scene. He played with drummer Shelly Manne’s group from 1961-69, as well establishing himself in the film and television studios. In 1968, Candoli joined the band on “The Tonight Show with Johnny Carson” and remained until Carson retired in 1992.

During the 1970s, he played and recorded with Frank Strazzeri, Teddy Edwards, and the groundbreaking group Supersax. Conte Candoli’s brother Pete, is also a trumpeter; they have gigged, toured, and recorded together since the 1950s.
