About this Piece

Echoes of Nightingales

Ms. Brewer ends her program of song with a tribute to her predecessors such as Helen Traubel, Kirsten Flagstad, Eileen Farrell and Eleanor Steber. These works by composers Sidney Homer, Edwin MacArthur, Paul Sargent, Frank Bridge, Idabelle Firestone, and Frank LaForge form a compendium of songs with which those divas were associated. With the exception of Frank Bridge (Benjamin Britten’s composition teacher), they represent American song writing in the first half of the 20th century.
