Carolyn Hove
English horn
Carolyn Hove has been the solo English horn player with the Los Angeles Philharmonic since 1988. Following her graduation from the Oberlin College Conservatory of Music, until she assumed the English horn position with the San Antonio Symphony in 1986, Hove had an active musical career in the Chicago area. She has long been a champion of new music, beginning with her affiliation with Ralph Shapey and the Contemporary Chamber Players of the University of Chicago and continuing with various other ensembles, including the LA Phil’s New Music Group.
Crystal Records has released three solo CDs by Hove: 20th Century Music for English Horn and Oboe (1996), Ascending to Superlatives (2000), and Eclecticism (2011). They feature premiere recordings of works by Salonen, Kraft, Gerhard Samuel, Paul Turok, Richard Lane, Patrician Morehead, Jeffrey Rathbun, Rolf Rudin, and John Steinmetz. Her recording of Alyssa Morris’ Chrysalis for English horn and piano (with Joanne Pearce Martin) has been released as a digital download on Amazon and iTunes. She had commissioned this work in 2014 and gave its premiere in June 2015.
Hove has appeared as a soloist in many venues and has given many U.S. and world premieres. In January of 2003, she gave the world premiere of William Kraft’s Concerto for English Horn and Orchestra with the Los Angeles Philharmonic led by Esa-Pekka Salonen; the work was commissioned by the orchestra and written expressly for her.
