Gavin Martin
Gavin Martin’s musical endeavors brought him to the United States from India, by way of the Royal College of Music in London. His approach to music is strongly influenced by the playing of the late Jorge Bolet and Gary Graffman, two pianists with whom he studied at the Curtis Institute, where he was awarded the Rachmaninoff Prize.
He has performed solo recitals on five continents, in addition to touring extensively as a chamber musician. The conductors he has appeared with include Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos and Zubin Mehta, who invited him to tour as soloist with the New York Philharmonic in 1985. He has toured under the auspices of the US State Department and has appeared on the television stations of the BBC, Suisse Romande, and ABC.
Martin often teams up as a piano duo with his wife, Joanne Pearce Martin. The duo have been featured with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl.
Southern California provides him with ideal weather for two of his passions: skydiving and aerobatic flying. He has made a BASE jump off the world’s tallest waterfall: Angel Falls in Venezuela.
Reviewing his New York City recital debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall, The New York Times carried the headline “Classical Light, Romantic Heat and a Dazzler.”
