  • Mar. 14, 2010

    Sunday, mARCH 14, 2010, at 7:30 PM

The month of March brings world class organist Hector Olivera to Walt Disney Concert Hall for an evening of Bach, Liszt, Franck, Michelseen, along with improvisations, Sunday, March 14, at 7:30 PM.
Olivera begins the evening with J.S. Bach’s Liebster Jesu, wir sind hier, BWV 633 (Dearest Jesus, We are here), a chorale prelude featured in the Orgelbüchlein or Little Organ Book. Next is Liszt’s Variations on Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen, a piece derived from Bach’s cantata Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen composed in 1725. Olivera continues the performance with Franck’s Prelude, Fugue and Variation, which was dedicated to Franck’s dear friend Camille Saint-Saëns. Olivera returns to Bach with one of his best-known works, Passacaglia and Fugue in C minor, BWV 582. Next he plays Toccata, Canzona, and Fugue on “Es sungen drei Engel,” by famed organist, teacher and composer Hans Friedrich Michelseen. The evening concludes with improvisations on well known themes and an original theme submitted by Dr. Cherry Rhodes.

Olivera, a passionate, gifted, and unique musician whose personal interpretations of both classical and popular music have amazed and delighted audiences around the world was born in Buenos Aires. His father was his first teacher and encouraged him to begin playing the pipe organ when he was three. Two years later, he was appointed organist of the Church of the Immaculate Conception. His prodigal command of the organ continued through his youth and in 1965, New York’s prestigious Juilliard School of Music offered him a scholarship. He immediately moved to the United States to study with Vernon de Tar and Bronson Reagan. Three years later, Hector won the National Improvisation Contest sponsored by the American Guild of Organists, thereby launching his outstanding professional concert career. Olivera now plays all over the world. He continues to thrill audiences with both solo classical literature and his own orchestral transcriptions, now released on DVD, and more than 20 classical, contemporary, and film score CDs. In addition to performing at concert halls throughout the world and presenting dedication recitals in churches and symphony halls, Hector Olivera consults on the design of Rodgers organs and represents both Rodgers Organs and the Roland Corporation worldwide.

The WALT DISNEY CONCERT HALL ORGAN was inaugurated in 2004.  Designed by Frank Gehry and Manuel Rosales of Rosales Organ Builders, the Walt Disney Concert Hall organ contains pipes ranging in size from a pencil to a telephone pole, and is voiced with a wide dynamic range from pianississimo to a breathtaking fortissimo.  The specially curved wood façade pipes were made by Glatter-Götz Orgelbau of solid, vertical grain Douglas fir and consist of the Violone and Bassoon basses. Behind the facade are three levels of pipes, including metal pipes made of tin and lead alloys and wood pipes made of Norwegian pine.
