Bramwell Tovey Leads the LA Phil and Cellist Christian Poltéra in the Annual Event, Along with the USC Trojan Marching Band

WHAT:
The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents two nights of music by Tchaikovsky with fireworks on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 9 and10, at 8:30 pm, with the LA Phil led by charismatic conductor Bramwell Tovey. Cellist Christian Poltéra performs Variations on a Rococo Theme for Cello and Orchestra in a program that also includes the Russian composer’s Romeo and Juliet and Music from Act IV of Swan Lake. The evening concludes with a performance of the 1812 Overture complete with cannons, a guest appearance by the USC Trojan Marching Band, directed by Dr. Arthur Bartner, and pyrotechnics to light up the sky.
Grammy award-winning conductor Bramwell Tovey is acknowledged around the world for his artistic depth as well as his warm, charismatic personality on the podium. His career as a conductor is uniquely enhanced by his work as a composer and pianist, lending him a remarkable musical perspective. His tenures as music director with the Vancouver Symphony, Luxembourg Philharmonic and Winnipeg Symphony Orchestras have been characterized by his expertise in operatic, choral, British and contemporary repertoire. Tovey, who is entering 12th season as Music Director of the Vancouver Symphony, also continues as founding host and conductor of the New York Philharmonic’s Summertime Classics series at Avery Fisher Hall. Tovey returns to the Hollywood Bowl to conduct the LA Philharmonic on Tuesday, September 13 in Mozart’s Requiem.
Virtuoso cellist Christian Poltéra’s distinguished career includes work with the Munich Philharmonic Orchestra, the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra and the American Symphony Orchestra. Poltéra was selected as a BBC New Generation Artist in 2004 and named 'Rising Star' of the European Concert Hall Organization in 2006/07. His latest CD, featuring cello concertos by Dutilleux and Lutoslawski, was released in 2009.
The USC Trojan Marching Band has tripled in size since Dr. Arthur C. Bartner became its director in 1970. With the assistance of long-time arranger Tony Fox, Dr. Bartner has built the band into a world-renowned performing group with frequent appearances at special events throughout the globe.
