WHAT:
Emmanuelle Haïm conducts two suites of Handel’s “Water Music” in her Los Angeles Philharmonic / Walt Disney Concert Hall debut in an all-Handel program on Thursday, November 17, at 8 PM and Saturday & Sunday, November 19 & 20, at 2 PM. The French harpsichordist/conductor, the first woman to conduct at the Lyric Opera of Chicago, continues to be one of the fastest rising stars in the Baroque world. As the Chicago Sun-Times recently raved, “pacing, emphasis, balance, style and line flowed with appropriate joy, sadness and elegance…Haim gave us a performance that said ‘Hail, Handel!’ from start to finish.”

This year Haïm debuted at the Paris Opera with Giulio Cesare. 2011 also marks the 10th anniversary of the foundation of Haïm’s ensemble, Le Concert d'Astrée, which will be celebrated on December 19 in Paris with a gala at the prestigious Théâtre des Champs-Elysée benefiting cancer Research. More than 25 singers will participate in the event, including Rolando Villazon and Natalie Dessay.

The Los Angeles concerts also feature Bulgarian soprano Sonya Yoncheva making her Los Angeles Philharmonic / Walt Disney Concert Hall debut in Handel’s Il delirio amoroso. Yoncheva was the 2010 winner of the world opera competition “Operalia” conducted and organized by Plácido Domingo at Teatro alla Scala in Milan.

Preceding each concert is an Upbeat Live event which takes place in Walt Disney Concert Hall’s BP Hall one hour before the concert and is free to all ticket holders. Lucinda Carver, pianist, harpsichordist, conductor and Professor at the USC Thornton School of Music, hosts.
