    WHAT:
The Seoul Philharmonic, with Music Director Myung-Whun Chung, makes its Walt Disney Concert Hall debut as part of the LA Phil’s 2011/12 Visiting Orchestras series, Thursday, April 19, at 8 pm. Recognized as Korea’s oldest and greatest orchestra, the Seoul Philharmonic performs Debussy’s La Mer, one of the supreme symphonic achievements, Ravel’s La Valse and Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No. 6, “Pathétique,” the composer’s final symphony.

The gifted Myung-Whun Chung served as LA Phil Associate Director under former Music Director Carlo Maria Giulini. He became Music Director and Chief Conductor of the Seoul Philharmonic in 2006. He’s also conducted virtually every leading orchestra throughout the world, including the Berlin and Vienna Philharmonics, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, all of the major London and Parisian orchestras, Filharmonica della Scala, Bayerische Rundfunk, Dresden Staatskapelle, the Boston and Chicago Symphonies, the Metropolitan Opera, the New York Philharmonic and the Cleveland and Philadelphia Orchestras.

The concert is the second event of the LA Phil’s 2011/12 Visiting Orchestras series. The final visiting orchestra for the 2011/12 season is the New York Philharmonic led by Alan Gilbert and featuring pianist Yefim Bronfman, May 9, 2012.

An Upbeat Live pre-concert event takes place in Walt Disney Concert Hall’s BP Hall one hour prior to the concert, and is free to all ticket holders. Russell Steinberg, UCLA faculty, Artistic Director of the Los Angeles Youth Orchestra, composer, conductor and performer, hosts.
