Andrews to Recite Holiday Poems for the All-New Show

The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association announces the addition of special guest Julie Andrews to the all-new Holiday Sing-Along.  Andrews, who will recite holiday poems, will be joining the Angeles Chorale with John Sutton, and host David Prather, for two performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Saturday, December 22, 2012 at 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM.

The Holiday Sing-Along encourages audiences to participate in the merry spirit of the season. Audience members are provided with lyric sheets of famed carols so they can sing along in an annual sold-out concert that is fun and entertaining for the whole family. 

Julie Andrews is a beloved and much-honored star of stage, screen and television. When she made her feature film debut in 1964’s Mary Poppins, she was already a Broadway legend.  Andrews’ iconic performance in the title role of the magical nanny brought her an Academy Award, a Golden Globe and a BAFTA Award. The following year, she earned a second Oscar nomination and won another Golden Globe Award for her unforgettable portrayal of Maria Von Trapp in The Sound of Music. She received her third Academy Award nomination and won another Golden Globe Award for her “dual” role in Victor/Victoria.

Today’s young film audiences may be more familiar with Andrews as a queen trying to train her teenaged granddaughter to be a princess in the hit films, The Princess Diaries, and its sequel, The Princess Diaries 2: The Royal Engagement. Andrews also voiced the character of Queen Lillian in the blockbuster hits Shrek 2, and Shrek the Third as well as the narration of the hugely successful Disney release Enchanted. In 2010, Andrews added to her multi-generational appeal with her appearances in The Tooth Fairy, Shrek Goes Fourth, and Despicable Me.

An even younger audience (and their parents) may know Andrews as a best-selling author of children’s books. Many of the books were co-authored with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, and to date there are over 25 titles published within The Julie Andrews Collection. The current franchise of “The Very Fairy Princess” has become hugely successful, and the soon to be released, “Julie Andrews’ Seasonal Treasures: Poems and Songs to Celebrate the Year” will be released this October in time for the holidays. Some of the poems and songs contained therein will be incorporated into the Holiday Sing-Along event. Currently, Andrews is directing an adaptation of one of her best-selling books, “The Great American Mousical” as a musical for the stage, opening this November at Goodspeed in Connecticut.

In addition to her stage, screen and publishing pursuits, Andrews has dedicated her life to her family and serving important charities and causes, including her recent appointment to the Board of Directors of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association to help further the organization's dedication to music education. She and her late husband, Blake Edwards, also helped start Operation USA, an international relief organization on behalf of which Julie traveled to such places as Vietnam and Cambodia. From 1992 to 2006 she served as the Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations Development Fund for Women (UNIFEM), which provides financial, educational and technical support for low-income women in developing countries.
