WHAT:       Violinist Hilary Hahn returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall in a recital featuring selections from her commissions project, In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores, interspersed with music by Fauré, Mozart and Bach, Tuesday, May 7, at 8 pm. The performance is the final recital of the Los Angeles Philharmonic’s 2012/13 season of Colburn Celebrity Recitals, which feature some of the world’s leading virtuosos. Hahn is joined by pianist Cory Smythe.

The recital program showcases seven new works from Hahn’s Encores project, an endeavor in which she commissioned composers to write short-form pieces for violin and piano. She premiered the first group of commissions during the 2011/12 season at Walt Disney Concert to great acclaim. The 27th work was selected through an online competition announced last June. Complementing the program of new music are Fauré’s Sonata for Violin and Piano No. 1 in A Major, Op. 13, Mozart’s Sonata No. 1 in A major for Violin and Piano, Op. 13, Mozart’s Sonata No. 19 in E-flat major for Violin and Piano, K. 302, and Bach’s Chaconne from Partita No. 2 for Solo Violin, BWV 1004.

Two-time Grammy-winning violinist Hilary Hahn has gained international recognition for her probing interpretations, compelling stage presence, and commitment to a wide range of repertoire as well as newly-commissioned music. Her extensive tours and dynamic recordings have made her one of the most sought-after artists of this era. Hahn appears regularly with the world’s elite orchestras and on prestigious recital series in Europe, Asia, and North and South America. In the 16 years since she began recording, Hahn has released 14 solo albums on the Deutsche Grammophon and Sony labels, in addition to three live performance DVDs, an Oscar-nominated movie soundtrack, and various compilations. She recently released two albums: one of Charles Ives’s sonatas for violin and piano, and another, Silfra, comprised of improvised music by herself and the prepared pianist Hauschka. She is currently touring several of the pieces she commissioned as part of her multi-year project, In 27 Pieces: the Hilary Hahn Encores, in recital. Hahn keeps a collection of her writings at hilaryhahn.com. Her violin case Tweets and Instagrams from the road at @violincase.

Hilary Hahn appears by arrangement with IMG Artists, 152 W. 57th St, 5th Floor, New York, NY 10019. Ms. Hahn’s recordings are available on Deutsche Grammophon and on Sony Classical/ Sony BMG Masterworks.
