WHAT:            The 2013 Jazz at the Bowl Series begins July 10, 2013 with Queen Latifah and Roy Ayers. The series also features, among others, Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert & Lani Hall, Dr. John’s Tribute to Louis Armstrong, Natalie Cole, Buddy Guy, George Benson’s Tribute to Nat King Cole, and Wayne Shorter’s 80^th Birthday Celebration. The season marks Herbie Hancock’s fourth year as Creative Chair for Jazz.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 10
Queen Latifah
Roy Ayers
Movie star, rapper, Grammy-winner, Emmy-winner and Oscar-nominee Queen Latifah is also an entrancing vocalist known for singing cool sophisticated standards and swinging soul classics. Returning to the Bowl after her triumphant 2007 concert, she brings a charismatic blend of sass, easy-going humor and a voice reminiscent of jazz greats Etta, Nina and Ella. Funky jazz vibesman Ayers opens.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 17
Sergio Mendes
Herb Alpert & Lani Hall
Multi-Grammy winners and long-time musical friends Sergio Mendes and Herb Alpert & Lani Hall bring to the Bowl a night of sublime jazz and irresistible Brazilian rhythms. Alpert & Hall lend their inventive sophistication and style to jazz standards and selections from the Great American Songbook. Renowned for hits such as “Mas Que Nada” and “The Look of Love,” Mendes closes out the party with his breezy Rio-pop grooves.

Props To Pops: Dr. John’s Tribute to Louis Armstrong
The Blind Boys of Alabama, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Telmary Diaz, Anthony Hamilton, special guests

New Orleans pianist Dr. John, with special guest trumpeters and singers, pays a loving tribute to New Orleans’ most famous son, the great Satchmo. From “Mack the Knife,” “When the Saints” and “Wonderful World” to his other lesser-known but seminal works, we bring Pops’ world to life with gritty, swamp-style grooves and some unexpected renditions.

Iconic comedian and accomplished instrumentalist Steve Martin brings his love of bluegrass and the banjo for a humorous and spirited set with the Steep Canyon Rangers and special guest Edie Brickell. New Orleans’ Pres Hall play vintage jazz and Peyroux opens with her Billie Holiday-tinged vocals and poetic, eclectic repertoire.

An Evening with Natalie Cole

Nine-time Grammy-winner, songwriter and beloved vocalist Natalie Cole has a career that ranges from gospel and R&B to the Great American Songbook. For this special return to the Bowl, she brings a new show and exciting new material with orchestra that will be unforgettable. Keyboard titan and “dean of Latin jazz” Valdés opens the evening with fiery Afro-Cuban interpretations of American jazz classics.

Funky Meters
A pioneer of the Chicago blues sound, #30 on Rolling Stone’s list of the "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time," a six-time Grammy-winner and recent Kennedy Center Honoree, Buddy Guy makes a welcome return with his searing guitar work and signature vocals. Tapping into the roots of super-group The Meters, the Funky Meters blend funk, blues and dance grooves with a New Orleans vibe.

George Benson: An Unforgettable Tribute to Nat King Cole

One of the world’s great jazz guitarists and vocal stylists, George Benson celebrates the release of a new CD paying tribute to the legendary Nat King Cole in a wonderfully elegant show with orchestra and chorus plus his band. A magical moment in music history is captured with tunes such as "Mona Lisa," “Nature Boy” and “Ramblin’ Rose,” as well as some of Benson’s own mega-hits. Four-time Grammy-winner and premiere jazz vocalist Dianne Reeves is the perfect complement with her gorgeous interpretations of standards and pop tunes.
