WHAT: Just added to ABBA Fest on September 8, 2013, at 7 p.m. is “ABBA-Cappella”, featuring three Los Angeles-area collegiate a cappella groups: The Scattertones (UCLA), SoundCheck (Chapman University), and The SoCal VoCals (USC). The groups will compete in a show-tune-styled sing-off of ABBA classics, including “Take a Chance on Me,” “Money, Money, Money,” and “Does Your Mother Know,” to be judged based on audience applause.
All three groups compete in the International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA), the foremost competition for college a cappella groups, and enjoy a friendly cross-town rivalry. The Hollywood Bowl sing-off pins the three high-achieving groups against each other once again, showcasing first-rate singing and choreography through original arrangements.
Previously announced, celebrated Swedish ABBA tribute band Waterloo will complete the night with ABBA’s greatest hits. Audiences are invited to dance and sing along to all the favorites, including “Mamma Mia,” “S.O.S,” “The Winner Takes It All,” and more.
WHO: The Scattertones are a co-ed a cappella group on UCLA’s campus who focus on new ways to sing pop, rock, jazz, and reggae. Over the years they have performed during Obama's 2008 Campaign, sung backup for Taylor Swift, and performed on KTLA 5. This past year they performed for the opening of UCLA’s new Pauley Pavilion, sang at the White House, and placed second in the final round of the 2013 International Championship of Collegiate A Cappella (ICCA).
Established in 1996, The SoCal VoCals are the University of Southern California’s premier a cappella group. Members hail from around the world, and study everything from music to business to aeronautical engineering. The SoCal VoCals have toured with much acclaim across the country and are the only group in the world to ever win three ICCAs. The group has been featured on The Today Show, in Newsweek magazine, and on the first three seasons of NBC’s The Sing Off. They have performed for the Los Angeles Kings, Miami Heat, USC Trojans, as well as USC football coach Lane Kiffin, and have shared the stage with such stars as Josh Groban, Sara Bareilles, Queen Latifah, Colbie Caillat, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Ben Folds. They released their latest album, Permit to Harmonize, in March of 2013.
Fifteen diverse musicians comprise SoundCheck, a student family bonded by its devotion to creating energetic a cappella music while having a blast. Founded in 2007 at Chapman University in Orange, California, the student-run group has grown into an a cappella powerhouse that performs entirely student-arranged pieces. SoundCheck’s greatest love is sharing its music and the group performs at events on and off campus and released its first CD, Everything, in October 2012. In April 2013, SoundCheck placed second at the ICCA Western Semifinals and was awarded Best Soloist.
