WHAT:  Richard Reed Parry (of Arcade Fire) featuring Bryce Dessner (of The National) and yMusic will open for Trey Anastasio with the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl on September 26, performing together selections from Music for Heart and Breath, Parry’s first full album of classical compositions, produced with friend and collaborator Bryce Dessner. Scott Dunn conducts the Los Angeles Philharmonic, performing in the second half only with Trey Anastasio.

Music for Heart and Breath (Deutsche Grammophon) is a collection of modern neo-classical pieces in which each note is played in synch with the heart rates or breathing rates of the performers, each musician generating their own tempo by listening to their pulse with a stethoscope during the performance.

As the red-headed polymath and multi-instrumentalist at the heart of the inventive art-rock band Arcade Fire, Richard Reed Parry has performed in front of immense crowds and sold millions of records across the world. But this is only one aspect of an artist whose unconventional trajectory has resulted in work that is as varied as it is surprising and unique. Raised in a community of oral-tradition folk musicians and medieval scholars; coming of age amidst an endless stream of early music and acapella singing; formally studying Literary Arts, electroacoustics and contemporary dance; immersing himself in Montreal's underground music and art scene; Parry’s endlessly ambitious and creative nature has known no bounds from an early age. Parry's solo work represents his own search for an aesthetic and experiential balance, a way to follow his own path while continuing to navigate the rollercoaster ride of being part of one of this generation's most acclaimed bands.

Bryce Dessner – who composes “gorgeous, full-hearted music” according to NPR – draws on elements from Baroque and folk music, late Romanticism and modernism, minimalism and the blues, as well as the inspiration of iconic figures from Béla Bartók, Benjamin Britten and Henryk Górecki to Morton Feldman, Terry Riley, Philip Glass and Steve Reich. All these influences inform Dessner’s organic and individual voice as a composer. On March 4, 2014, Dessner released St. Carolyn by the Sea on Deutsche Grammophon, his debut recording for the label. St. Carolyn by the Sea includes three luminous Dessner compositions – the title work, Lachrimae and Raphael – performed by the Copenhagen Philharmonic under conductor André de Ridder. The recordings also feature performances on guitar by Dessner and his twin brother, Aaron. Dessner first earned wide renown as a co-founding guitarist (along with Aaron) of the Grammy Award-nominated rock band The National. Yet, as WQXR New York has pointed out: “… ‘of The National’ is a phrase that often follows Bryce Dessner’s name. It’s not too shabby a suffix, but… listeners may find that title to be inadequate for his talents, if they haven’t already.”

Hailed by NPR's Fred Child as "one of the groups that has really helped to shape the future of classical music," yMusic is a group of six New York City instrumentalists flourishing in the overlap between the pop and classical worlds. Their virtuosic execution and unique configuration (string trio, flute, clarinet, and trumpet) has attracted the attention of high profile collaborators -- from Dirty Projectors to My Brightest Diamond. This fall, yMusic will release Balance Problems, the anticipated follow-up to 2011's Beautiful Mechanical (Time Out New York's #1 Classical Record of the Year). The record features new compositions from Nico Muhly, Sufjan Stevens, Andrew Norman, Mark Dancigers, Jeremy Turner, Marcos Balter, and Timo Andres.
