OF FRANCESCONI'S DUENDE
WITH LEILA JOSEFOWICZ
Los Angeles, October 23, 2017 - Susanna Mälkki's first season as the Los Angeles Philharmonic's Principal Guest Conductor features a mix of new music and core composers, across three subscription weeks and a Green Umbrella concert, beginning October 27, 2017 and concluding January 23, 2018.
For her first concert, Mälkki pairs with a fellow new music champion, violinist Leila Josefowicz, in a program featuring the U.S. premiere of Luca Francesconi's Duende - The Dark Notes, a work which they premiered in 2014. The program also presents two works by Berlioz - "Queen Mab" Scherzo and Symphonie fantastique.
Next for Mälkki are the Thursday, November 2 through Sunday, November 5 presentations of Mendelssohn's A Midsummer Night's Dream. The performances feature the complete Mendelssohn incidental music interspersed with scenes from the Shakespeare play. The cast of theater actors includes: Andy Robinson, Paige Lindsey White, Will Bradley, Burt Grinstead, Nic Few, Alexander Ruth Wright, Katherine Ko, Raymond McAnally, Loren Lester, Will Block, Matthew Patrick Davis, Cloie Wyatt Taylor and Quinn Francis. Also on the program are soprano Amanda Forsythe, mezzo-soprano Emily Fons and the Women of the Los Angeles Master Chorale.
Mälkki's third subscription week offers the U.S. premiere of Zimmerman's concerto for cello and orchestra, choreographed by Tero Saarinen and danced by the Tero Saarinen Company, and featuring LA Phil Principal Cello Robert deMaine.
January 23 sees Mälkki's last concert of the season, a Green Umbrella performance with the LA Phil New Music Group that includes the world premiere of a new work by Marcos Balter and Helmut Lachenmann's seminal work Mouvement
