Los Angeles, CA (February 27, 2019) – Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel and the Los Angeles Philharmonic announced today full details of their Spring 2019 tour to Seoul, South Korea and Tokyo, Japan, kicking off an extraordinary global tour that includes seven residencies in seven cities, and performing on three continents as part of the orchestra’s Centennial celebrations. This Asian tour will be the orchestra’s 73rd tour, the fourth to Korea and ninth to Japan, and will include seven concerts.
The LA Phil returns to Seoul Arts Center (March 16), makes its debut in the Seoul Olympic Park Gymnastics Arena (March 17) and presents a chamber program in Lotte Concert Hall (March 18). The performance in the 10,000-seat Seoul Olympic Park Gymnastics Arena will be the orchestra’s first in an international stadium, with a program celebrating the music of John Williams, including a selection of unforgettable themes from his much-loved film scores. This performance will also feature full IMAG (image magnification) projection and film clips to accompany parts of the program. Returning to Tokyo’s Suntory Hall-Blue Rose (March 19) and Suntory Hall (March 20 and 22), the orchestra will make its debut in NHK’s Hall (March 21) with the John Williams program. This concert will be captured live for delayed broadcast on NHK TV (Japan only) and on NHK Radio. See below for full tour program details.
A companion double album of the John Williams program will be released worldwide on March 15 by Deutsche Grammophon, recorded live in Walt Disney Concert Hall in January 2019.
Fifteen musicians from Gustavo’s signature program YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) will be joining the LA Phil in Korea, participating in a cultural exchange with 65 musicians from the Korea Arts & Culture Education Service (El Sistema Korea: Orchestra of Dreams) which will culminate in an open rehearsal conducted by Gustavo Dudamel (March 16).
