Conductor Charles Dutoit returns to Los Angeles for the first time in more than a decade to lead the Los Angeles Philharmonic at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Thursday, April 22, at 8 p.m., Friday, April 23, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, April 25, at 2 p.m. in a program featuring violinist Gil Shaham.

Dutoit, one of the world's leading conductors and highly regarded Berlioz interpreter, opens the concerts with Berlioz's Roman Carnival Overture and Symphonic Dances by Rachmaninoff, two showpieces for orchestra. Symphonic Dances was Rachmaninoff's final composition.

Internationally acclaimed violinist Shaham joins the orchestra in the second half of the program as soloist in Brahms' Violin Concerto in D major, Op. 77. Brahms composed the Violin Concerto for his recital partner, musical advisor, and friend, Joseph Joachim, an impressive virtuoso in his own right who aided Brahms in composing the piece in the summer of 1878.

Upbeat Live pre-concert events take place one hour prior to each concert in BP Hall at Walt Disney Concert Hall and are free to all ticket holders. Sunday's event will take place at 12:45 p.m. in the Walt Disney Concert Hall Auditorium. Musicologist Nancy Fierro hosts.

CHARLES DUTOIT is currently the principal conductor of the NHK Symphony Orchestra in Japan, an association that began in 1987 when he was a guest conductor. In 1998, he was named the orchestra's first-ever music director. Dutoit recently concluded his long tenure as music director with the Montreal Symphony, but continues in his post of music director of the Orchestre National de France, in which he has served since 1990. His numerous recordings can be heard on the Deutsche Grammophon, EMI, Philips, CBS, and Erato labels, and he maintains an active guest conducting schedule in Europe and the United States.

Violinist GIL SHAHAM has traveled the world collaborating with some of classical music's most respected conductors and performing with orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the Israel Philharmonic, the Orchestre de Paris, and The Cleveland Orchestra. Shaham's recital engagements are highlighted by performances in New York's Carnegie Hall,
Chicago, Florence, London, and Vienna. As an exclusive Deutsche Grammophon artist, Shaham has recorded numerous solo discs in addition to concerto recordings with the Philharmonia Orchestra, the New York Philharmonic, and the Chicago Symphony, and collaborations with guitarist Göran Söllscher and the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra. In 1999, Shaham won a Grammy Award for his recital-album "American Scenes" with André Previn at the piano.
