Pulling Out All the Stops! Features New Walt Disney Concert Hall Pipe Organ
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 6
CHILDREN'S WORKSHOPS AT 10AM; CONCERT AT 11AM
Sponsored by Toyota
Drawn from the world of silent film, the character of the little tramp, performed by Randy Schulman, helps the audience to stop, look, and listen in this mysterious and fanciful journey through the pipes of the Walt Disney Concert Hall pipe organ.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Toyota Symphonies for Youth concerts take place on six Saturday mornings throughout the season. Before every concert, Walt Disney Concert Hall becomes a musical playground with hands-on art making, musical activities, dance, theater, and storytelling. Workshops take place in the lobby and garden spaces one hour prior to the performance.
At the age of 27, conductor JOANA CARNEIRO has attracted considerable attention as an outstanding young conductor. She is the recipient of the Young Musicians Foundation Conducting Grant and the BMI Foundation, Inc. Lionel Newman Conducting Study Grant. She serves as Music Director of the YMF Debut Orchestra, having won the Young Musicians Foundation's 2002 National Conductor Search. She continues in the footsteps of such YMF alumni as André Previn, Michael Tilson Thomas, and Myung-Whun Chung. A native of Lisbon, Portugal, Carneiro began her musical studies as a violist before receiving her conducting degree from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon - she received her master's degree in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University. She is currently pursuing a doctoral degree at the University of Michigan. In 2003/04 Carneiro participated in the International Conductors' Academy of the Allianz Cultural Foundation with Kurt Masur and Christoph von Dohnányi in London. As a 2002 finalist of the Maazel-Vilar Conductor's Competition at Carnegie Hall, Carneiro was invited by the jury to conduct the Prelude to Act III of Richard Wagner's Lohengrin. She was a Fellow at the Aspen Music Festival in 2003.
Pianist JOANNE PEARCE MARTIN joined the Los Angeles Philharmonic as principal keyboardist in 2001. She performs regularly with the orchestra on five instruments - piano, organ, celesta, harpsichord, and synthesizer (occasionally on a Macintosh computer!). She appears frequently on the Philharmonic's chamber music and Green Umbrella series; this past summer she was one of the soloists at the Hollywood Bowl in John Adams' Grand Pianola Music. Originally from Allentown, Pennsylvania, Martin continues her career as a soloist, chamber musician, and recording artist. A graduate of Philadelphia's Curtis Institute of Music, she has performed as soloist with many orchestras in the U.S. and abroad. When she's not making music, you may find Joanne in the air - she is a master-rated skydiver and licensed pilot.
Director/writer JANE McENEANEY started playing the piano at the age of five and quickly discovered she could sing far better than play. She sang in the choir, school plays and musicals. Later, with a B.A. in Theatre and Asian Studies from Connecticut College and a Master's of Music in Voice Performance from the University of Michigan, Jane moved to Chicago and spent nearly five years singing and acting at theatres. In 1992 she moved to Los Angeles and, after 6 years of commercial auditions, returned to her roots in the theatre, establishing the M.Y.E. theatre company. It was there that Jane was able to bring the arts together and establish her own style of theatre: boldly colorful, wildly theatrical storytelling. Jane uses percussion extensively in her work and all M.Y.E. sound effects are played live, on stage. She has written and directed StoryPeople, the critically acclaimed CloudCuckooLand, three seasons of StoryDrumming and Origins (co-written with Sandy Vago). Her love of the theatre has grown to include a host of teenagers whom she has taught over the past four years, at both Culver City High School Academy of Visual and Performing Arts and Sage Hill School in Newport Coast. Jane is in the process of launching The Phenomenal Project, a mobile creative writing and drama workshop for teenage girls. Jane is an alumna of the Lincoln Center Directors Lab West and is a former board member of the L.A. Stage Alliance.
Actor RANDY SCHULMAN grew up in Los Angeles writing and directing plays since he was kid. He has come to portray the character you'll see in "Pulling Out all the Stops" straight from the production of La Gioconda, a live-action silent movie that Randy wrote for Stages Theatre Center-it's a physical comedy about the world's most famous painting, the Mona Lisa. Randy is also working on his first children's book series, Spaceboy.
