Beloved violinist Itzhak Perlman makes his Walt Disney Concert Hall debut in recital on Monday, January 10, at 8 p.m. His performance is part of the 2004/2005 Colburn Celebrity Series, presented by the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, featuring the world's leading virtuosos. Perlman's longtime collaborator Janet Goodman Guggenheim joins him on piano in a program featuring works by Mozart, Beethoven, Dvorák and Smetana.

Perlman begins the evening with two sonatas for Violin and Piano: Mozart's Sonata in F Major, K. 377 and Beethoven's Sonata No. 9 in A Major, Op. 47, "Kreutzer." More than 200 years since its composition, the "Kreutzer" Sonata remains one of the best-known and most important of violin sonatas. Two Bohemian composers dominate the second half of the program with Dvorák Four Romantic Pieces, Op. 75 and Smetana's From the Homeland.

Itzhak Perlman's recital is the third of eight Colburn Celebrity Recitals this season at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The series continues on January 28 with pianist Leif Ove Andsnes; February 28 with pianist Pierre-Laurent Aimard; March 23 with pianists Emanuel Ax and Yefim Bronfman; and April 20 with cellist Han-Na Chang; the series concludes on May 18 with pianist André Watts.

Undeniably the reigning virtuoso of the violin, ITZHAK PERLMAN enjoys superstar status rarely afforded a classical musician. President Reagan granted him a "Medal of Liberty" in 1986, and President Clinton awarded him the "National Medal of Arts" in December 2000. In December 2003, he received a Kennedy Center Honor celebrating his distinguished achievements. He proudly possesses four Emmy Awards and 15 Grammy awards for his television appearances and recordings. In addition to his many orchestral and recital appearances throughout the world, Perlman performs as conductor with leading orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic, the London Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the Chicago Symphony and the New York Philharmonic. He is Principal Guest Conductor of the Detroit Symphony and was Music Advisor of the St. Louis Symphony for two seasons. During the 2004-2005 season, Perlman conducts the Tonhalle Orchestra and the orchestras of San Francisco, Houston, Montreal, and Toronto. He performs more than 25 recitals internationally, visiting cities including London, Zurich, Los Angeles, Cleveland, Boston, Washington, D.C., and New York. Perlman devotes considerable time to education, both in his participation each summer in the Perlman Music Program and in his teaching at the Juilliard School, where he holds the Dorothy Richard Starling Foundation Chair.

Pianist JANET GOODMAN GUGGENHEIM has given recitals throughout the world both as soloist and collaborative artist, performing with such illustrious musicians as violinists Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman, bassist Gary Karr, flutist Ransom Wilson, and cellists Pierre Fournier and Matt Haimovitz. She was a co-founder of the Chamber Soloists of San Francisco and has performed at the festivals of Carmel, Cabrillo, Marin, Sacramento, Mendocino, and Seattle, and at Chamber Music Northwest, the San Francisco Symphony Russian Festival, and the Hollywood Bowl. Guggenheim's longtime collaboration with Itzhak Perlman includes recent tours throughout Europe and Asia. The duo appeared in recital in 1990 at Tchaikovsky Hall in Moscow and in 1992 at the Istanbul International Festival. In December 1994 she performed in recital with Perlman in Singapore, Hong Kong, and Taipei. Guggenheim received a master's degree from the Juilliard School, where she worked as studio pianist for the renowned pedagogues Ivan Galamian, Dorothy DeLay, Joseph Fuchs, and Leonard Rose. Her current CD releases include the complete cello and piano works of Rachmaninoff with cellist Michael Grebanier (Naxos).
