Joana Carneiro, who has generated critical plaudits and audience acclaim as the Los Angeles Philharmonic's conducting fellow, leads the orchestra in a program of Russian favorites on Thursday, August 10, 2006, at 8 p.m. at the Hollywood Bowl. The concert features Mussorgsky's Prelude to Khovanshchina (the composer's vast historical opera), Tchaikovsky's emotional Symphony No. 4, and Rachmaninoff's enthralling Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini with pianist Stephen Hough.

Carneiro joined the Philharmonic as its Conducting Fellow at the beginning of the 2004/2005 season, and will assume the title of Assistant Conductor in the Fall. She is also principal guest conductor of the Metropolitan Orchestra of Lisbon. Stephen Hough has emerged as a unique presence on the international concert scene. From highly acclaimed performances of standard repertoire in recital and with the world's finest orchestras to a particular interest in unusual and neglected works of the late 19th century, he has been hailed for performances that combine the imagination and pianistic color of the past with the scholarship of the present.

JOANA CARNEIRO was a finalist of the 2002 Maazel-Vilar Conductor's Competition at Carnegie Hall where she was recognized by the jury for demonstrating a level of potential that holds great promise for her future career. Since then, her profile has grown quickly both in the U.S. and Europe, and recent engagements have included performances with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Algarve Symphony, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Carneiro recently completed her tenure as music director of Los Angeles' Young Musician's Debut Orchestra. In past seasons she served as music director of the Campus Philharmonia Orchestra (Michigan), and as Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. She has also conducted the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Macau Chamber Orchestra and the Beijing Orchestra at the International Musica Festival of Macau, the Portuguese National Symphony Orchestra, and the Beiras Philharmonic Orchestra. A native of Lisbon, Carneiro began her musical studies as a violist before receiving her conducting degree from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon. Carneiro received her master's degree in orchestral conducting from Northwestern University, and she is currently pursuing her doctorate with a full scholarship at the University of Michigan, where she studies conducting with Kenneth Kiesler. In March 2004, Carneiro was decorated by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Jorge Sampaio, with the Commendation of the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique.

Since winning first prize in the Naumburg International Piano Competition in 1983, STEPHEN HOUGH has performed with major American and European orchestras, regularly plays recitals in the major halls all over the world, and is a frequent guest at many international festivals, including Aspen, Ravinia, Tanglewood, Blossom, Saratoga, Mostly Mozart, Edinburgh, Salzburg, and the Proms, where he has appeared over a dozen times. In 2001, in recognition of his achievements and contributions to music, Hough was the first classical musician to be awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship. Recent performance highlights include engagements with the New York Philharmonic, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Boston, Detroit, National, Atlanta, St. Louis, Toronto, Houston, and Montreal symphonies; appearances at Lincoln Center and the Kennedy Center with the Philharmonia Orchestra led by Vladimir Ashkenazy; and recitals in Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Atlanta, Lincoln Center, and Carnegie Hall. European appearances include performances with the London Symphony Orchestra, the Israel Philharmonic, the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; recitals at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, Queen Elizabeth Hall, and Wigmore Hall in London, the Louvre in Paris, and at the Salzburg Festival; and chamber music projects at the Konzerthaus in Vienna and Wigmore Hall. Hough also frequently tours in Japan, Australia, and New Zealand. An exclusive Hyperion recording artist, Stephen Hough has made over 30 recordings, many of which have won international prizes such as the Diapason d'Or, the Deutscher Schallplattenpreis, and Classic CD and Gramophone Awards. In October 2002, Gramophone gave Hough his second Record of the Year award for the Complete Works for Piano and Orchestra of Saint-Saëns with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sakari Oramo.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and in 1991 gave its name to the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra, a resident ensemble that has filled a special niche in the musical life of Southern California. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 38th season. Attendance figures over the past several decades have soared: in 1980 the Bowl first topped the half-million mark and close to one million admissions have been recorded. In February 2006, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the second year in a row at the 17th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
