SUNDAY, FEBRUARY 4, 2007, 7:30 PM
Presented in association with KCRW
The Los Angeles Philharmonic's World Music Series continues with the debut appearance of Paco de Lucía, the world's foremost flamenco guitarist, on Sunday February 4, 2007, 7:30 p.m. at Walt Disney Concert Hall. A pioneer of modern flamenco, Paco de Lucía is widely acclaimed for his innovative and revolutionary compositions.
Paco de Lucía has adapted the past to the present, and awakened a new generation to the power and appeal of flamenco. He is the creator of the current concept of the flamenco band, and his innovations, such as the use of jazz instruments and complex harmonies, are widely adopted, setting the model for modern-day flamenco instrumentation. This performance features signature songs such as Soeá, Bulerías, Zyryab, Paenque and many others.
The 2006/2007 World Music Series at Walt Disney Concert Hall concludes on April 28, 2007 with Malian superstar Salif Keita, who blends his traditional griot roots with African grooves, Islamic tinges and Western pop.
PACO DE LUCÍA is a living legend of flamenco guitar. Born in Algeciras (Cádiz) in 1947 into a family of musicians, he counts among his biggest influences his father, flamenco guitarist Antonio Sanchez, his elder brother, flamenco guitarist Ramon de Algeciras, and his master Nino Ricardo. His first performance was broadcast when he was just 11 years old. In 1962 Paco de Lucía won an award at the International Flamenco Contest in Jerez. Shortly thereafter he toured with his brothers around the world, and ventured into the world of composition. In 1970, Paco de Lucía met flamenco vocalist Camarón de la Isla, beginning a creative partnership that produced more than ten records. His 2004 recording Cositas Buenas received a Grammy nomination for Best Contemporary World Music Album and won the Latin Grammy for Best Flamenco Album. Billboard also named it the Best Latin Jazz Record of the year. Also in 2004, Paco de Lucía was the first flamenco artist to receive Spain's prestigious Premio Príncipe de Asturias award.
