Program Features Children's Concerts Exploring the Music and Art of World Cultures

The popular children's festival SummerSounds: Music and Art for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl returns for its 39th season at the world-famous venue, with a series of new programs designed to take children on a musical voyage around the world. One of the most popular children's festivals in Southern California, the six-week program features interactive music performances and a Fine Arts Outdoor Studio designed to engage children 3 to 11 years of age. This year, SummerSounds begins Monday, July 9, and continues through Friday, August 17, with two performances each weekday morning at 10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. in the Museum Patio, located on the grounds of the Hollywood Bowl.

This year's themes focus on music from Mexico, Cuba, India, Jordan, Greece and Appalachia (U.S.). Children join the crew of the magical ship, the SS Global Harmony, to travel to different lands and encounter the culture and music of these countries through musicians, dancers and singers. Storyteller David Prather returns as Cap'n Dave, as well as composer David O as the Professor, and dancer Ameenah Kaplan as Harpoona. Scheduled performing groups include Danza Floricanto, Sono-Lux, Rangoli Dance Company, Naser Musa Ensemble, Dionysos Greek Folklore Group, and Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band. This year's program continues the Fine Arts Outdoor Studio, a workshop for children to create imaginative works of art inspired by the theme of the week. Two Fine Arts Outdoor Studio sessions also take place each weekday at 10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.

SCHEDULED PROGRAMS

MEXICO - Danza Floricanto/USA

Week One: July 9-13

Music: Danza Floricanto/USA - the oldest professional Mexican folk dance troupe in Southern California - recreates the movement, costumes and songs of regions across Mexico, from Aztec ritual to the vibrant fiestas of today's Jalisco.

Art: Explore Mexico and learn about the rich artistic traditions of our amigos al sur. Meet the painters Frida y Diego, and make a huitchol yarn painting, a mask, or a clay vessel.

CUBA - Sono-Lux

Week Two: July 16-20

Music: Whether it's Cuban timba, old-school salsa dura, bembe, or a fusion of salsa and funk, the West Coast-based Afro-Cuban band Sono-Lux brings the hot sounds and pulsing rhythms vibrantly to life.

Art: Sail to the island of Cuba to learn about famous Cuban musicians, or make a clay sea creature, a Cuban style doll, a flower garland, or beaded jewelry for Carnival!

INDIA - Rangoli Dance Company

Week Three: July 23-27

Music: Through movement, music, text and improvisation, the Rangoli Dance Company promotes a richer understanding of the heritage and dance of India, specializing in classical dance of southern India (Bharata Natyam).

Art: Did you know that the peacock is the National Bird of India? Learn about this colorful land and try your hand at one of the many art forms from this rich culture. Make an elephant sculpture, a rangoli sand painting, a peacock vest, mudras shadow puppets or a beaded mosaic of the Taj Mahal.

JORDAN - Naser Musa Ensemble

Week Four: July 30-August 3

Music: With master percussionist Souhail Kaspar and friends, oud phenom and Arab vocalist Naser Musa performs Palestinian-Jordanian songs and a repertoire stretching from the Mediterranean to the Persian Gulf.

Art: Explore the Kingdom of Jordan. Choose to make a musical instrument, worry beads, a camel sand painting or a tile mosaic.

GREECE - Dionysos Greek Folklore Group

Week Five: August 6-10

Music: Dionysos Greek Folklore Group, under the artistic direction of Athan Karras, present a tale from Greek mythology through music, song and dance representing the varied authentic folklore of Greece, which spans several thousand years of civilization.

Art: Visit ancient Greece to learn about mythological creatures, magical gods and goddesses, and Olympic athletes. Learn basic printmaking techniques to make a Greek motif print, or choose to make a clay sculpture, a mosaic or a colorful mask.

APPALACHIA (U.S.) - Susie Glaze & the Hilonesome Band

Week Six: August 13-17

Music: Appalachian mountain roots meets new bluegrass as remarkable young singer Susie Glaze teams with the Hilonesome Band, an exciting group of Southern California's top bluegrass players.

Art: Breathe in the fresh air of the Appalachian Mountains and check out some good ole American arts and crafts. Make a banjo, a quilt inspired by the women of Gee's Bend, a spinning weather vane, or a wooden whimsical creature.

Performances

Performances for children ages 3-11 are held Monday through Friday at 10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. on the SummerSounds stage, located in the Museum Patio. A different program is featured each week and performed twice daily. Capacity is limited, so advance ticket purchase is encouraged.

Fine Arts Outdoor Studio

Kids let their imaginations soar as they explore our Fine Arts Outdoor Studio at 10 a.m. and 11:15 a.m. Professional artists at different stations guide them in creating original works of art, whether it's painting, sculpture or other fine arts. This outdoor studio is very fun AND creative!

Admission

Performance: $6 per person. SummerSounds is designed to engage children ages three and above. We ask that everyone in the party be attentive to the performance without disrupting other people and performers. Regardless of age, all guests must have tickets to enter, due to limitations of performance area. Fine Arts Outdoor Studio: $4 per child; children must be 3 years of age or older to participate. Group Discounts

• Discounts are available for groups of 20 or more.
• Due to limited space in the children's seating area, we encourage groups to include no more than 2 adults for every 10 kids in a group reservation.
• Individual groups will be seated once their entire group has arrived.
• Tickets are $4 per person for performances, and $2 per child for the Fine Arts Outdoor Studio. Minimum 20 paid admissions for the same performance.

Parking: Parking in Lot B lot is free until 4:30 p.m.

Picnics and Concessions: The grounds of the Hollywood Bowl, including all picnic areas, are open daily to visitors. Open House patrons may bring a picnic to enjoy during their visit to the Bowl, or purchase refreshments from the concession stand located near the Patio stage.
