Assistant Conductor Joana Carneiro Leads the Philharmonic in a Program of Bizet, Falla, Villa-Lobos, and Rimsky-Korsakov

The Los Angeles Philharmonic begins its 2007/08 Neighborhood Concert series with a free performance at the San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, formerly known as the San Gabriel Civic Auditorium, on Wednesday, September 26, at 8 p.m. Assistant Conductor Joana Carneiro leads the Los Angeles Philharmonic in a program featuring soprano soloist Lori Ann Fuller.
The Latin-flavored program includes Bizet's Suite No. 1 from Carmen; Falla's Suite from El amor brujo; Villa-Lobos' Bachianas Brasileiras No. 5 with soprano Lori Ann Fuller as soloist; and Rimsky-Korsakov's Capriccio espagnol.
Admission to the concert is free. Tickets may be obtained by sending a self-addressed, stamped envelope to San Gabriel Mission Playhouse, LA Philharmonic Concert, 320 South Mission Drive, San Gabriel, CA 91778-0130, or by calling 626.457.4600. A maximum of 4 tickets is given per person. Ticket requests are filled on a first-come, first-served basis. The one-hour concert performance is presented without an intermission.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic's neighborhood concerts in the community include free orchestra, chamber music and jazz concerts in churches, community centers and other local venues around Southern California. The Los Angeles Philharmonic has been presenting free neighborhood concerts for the past 16 years, as part of the organization's dedication to making music accessible to the widest possible audience.
JOANA CARNEIRO was a finalist of the 2002 Maazel-Vilar Conductor's Competition at Carnegie Hall, recognized by the jury for demonstrating a level of potential that holds great promise for her future career. Since then, her profile has grown quickly both in the U.S. and Europe, and recent engagements have included performances with the Gulbenkian Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the Santa Rosa Symphony, the Algarve Symphony, and the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. Carneiro was Music Director of the Los Angeles Debut Orchestra and also served as Music Director of the Campus Philharmonia Orchestra (Michigan), and as Assistant Conductor of the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra. She has conducted the Frankfurt Radio Symphony, the Toledo Symphony Orchestra, the Macau Chamber Orchestra and the Beijing Orchestra at the International Musica Festival of Macau, the Portuguese National Symphony Orchestra, and the Beiras Philharmonic Orchestra. A native of Lisbon, Carneiro began her musical studies as a violist before receiving her conducting degree from the Academia Nacional Superior de Orquestra in Lisbon. In 2004, Carneiro was decorated by the President of the Portuguese Republic, Jorge Sampaio, with the Commendation of the Order of the Infante Dom Henrique.
Since her prestigious debuts in London and Chicago, LORI ANN FULLER has performed several roles with opera companies around the United States. In the 2005-2006 season, Ms. Fuller performed for the Los Angeles Opera, including concerts for the Hispanics for LA Opera and recitals for numerous Educational Outreach Programs. She sang the role of Violetta in a concert version of La traviata for LA Opera's Opera for Educators. In the 2006-2007 season, Fuller covered the roles of the Maidens in the LA Opera production of Rise and Fall of the City of Mahagonny, and in March 2007, she repeated the role of Violetta in her debut with the Pacific Repertory Opera. A native of Bossier City, Louisiana, soprano Lori Ann Fuller made her Lyric Opera of Chicago debut as Rose Maurrant in Kurt Weill's Street Scene in October 2001, and in August 2000 she made her BBC Proms debut, also as Rose Maurrant, in a concert sequence of Street Scene. Fuller's London debut came in January 2000 when she was heard as Angela in Weill's Firebrand of Florence. Fuller is recognized by numerous vocal competitions including the Metropolitan Opera National Council, Palm Beach Opera, Florida Grand Opera, Mobile Opera, and Shreveport Opera.
The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's Neighborhood Concert series, created in 1991, encourages involvement in the classical arts within the increasingly diverse communities of greater Los Angeles. The events take place in churches, schools, and other venues throughout Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association, under Music Director Esa-Pekka Salonen, presents the finest in orchestral and chamber music, recitals, new music, jazz, world music and holiday concerts at two of the most remarkable places anywhere to experience music - Walt Disney Concert Hall and the Hollywood Bowl. In addition to a 30-week winter subscription season at Walt Disney Concert Hall, the LA Phil presents a 12-week summer festival at the legendary Hollywood Bowl, summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and home of the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra.
