Celebrated pianist András Schiff inaugurates a two-year, eight-concert Beethoven Sonata Cycle, surveying all 32 of the composer's piano sonatas, mostly in chronological order, as part of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Association's Colburn Celebrity Recital series on Wednesday, October 10 and Wednesday, October 17, 2007, at 8 p.m., at Walt Disney Concert Hall. The October 10 concert features Piano Sonatas Nos. 1 in F Minor, Op. 2, No. 1; No. 2 in A Major, Op. 2, No. 2; No. 3 in C Major, Op. 2, No. 3; and No. 4 in E-flat Major, Op. 7. On the program for the October 17 evening are Piano Sonatas Nos. 5 in C Minor, Op. 10, No. 1; No. 6 in F Major, Op. 10, No. 2; Sonata No. 7 in D Major, Op. 10, No. 3; and Sonata No. 8 in C Minor, Op. 13, "Pathétique."

Spanning the length of Beethoven's compositional career, these works offer a view of his personal musical development and the piano sonata as a genre undergoing an extraordinary evolution.

Schiff performs the third and fourth recitals in this series on April 2 and April 9, 2008, and the last four during the Philharmonic's 2008/2009 season.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's Colburn Celebrity recitals offer virtuoso performances by world-renowned artists in addition to Schiff including violinist Itzhak Perlman (January 20, 2008), pianist Lang Lang (March 4, 2008), violinist Midori (April 13, 2008), violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter (April 8, 2008).

ANDRÁS SCHIFF was born in Budapest, Hungary, in 1953 and is today a British citizen. Recitals and special projects take him to all of the international music capitals and include cycles of the major keyboard works of Bach, Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Chopin, and Bartók. In 2004, he began series of performances that explore the 32 Beethoven piano sonatas in chronological order, a project recorded live for ECM New Series and released in September 2005. In 1999, Schiff created his own chamber orchestra, the Cappella Andrea Barca, for a seven-year series of the complete Mozart piano concertos, taking place at the Mozartwoche of the Internationale Stiftung Mozarteum in Salzburg. The group, which consists of international soloists, chamber musicians, and close friends, tours North America during the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons in a series of concerts slated for Carnegie Hall and Alice Tully Hall to commemorate the 250th anniversary of Mozart's birth. The six concerts will include twelve of the Mozart piano concerti, chamber music, and symphonies. In the fall of 2006, Schiff gives Mozart recitals at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, Walt Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles, and the Gilmore Festival in Kalamazoo, MI. Schiff is a regular visitor as conductor and soloist with the Philadelphia Orchestra, the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the National Symphony Orchestra, the Staatskapelle Dresden, the Budapest Festival Orchestra, and the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Since childhood, Schiff has enjoyed playing chamber music and was Artistic Director of the "Musiktage Mondsee," an annual chamber music festival near Salzburg from 1989 until 1998. He is presently joint artistic director of the "Ittinger Pfingstkonzerte," a chamber music festival he founded in Switzerland with Heinz Holliger in 1995. In 1998, Schiff started a similar series entitled "Hommage to Palladio" at the Teatro Olimpico in Vicenza. In September 2004 he became artist in residence of "Kunstfest Weimar," a new festival in Germany. Schiff has established a prolific discography, including recordings for Teldec (1994-1997), London/Decca (1981-1994) and, since 1997, ECM New Series. He has received several international recording awards, including two Grammy awards for "Best Classical Instrumental Soloist (Without Orchestra)" for the Bach English Suites, and "Best Vocal Recording" for Schubert's Schwanengesang with tenor Peter Schreier. Among other honors, Schiff was awarded the Bartók Prize in 1991 and the Claudio Arrau Memorial medal from the Robert Schumann Society in Düsseldorf in 1994. In March 1996, Schiff received the highest Hungarian distinction, the Kossuth Prize, and in May 1997 he received the Leonie Sonnings Music Prize in Copenhagen. He was awarded the Palladio d'Oro by the city of Vicenza, and the Musikfest Preis Bremen for "outstanding international artistic work" in 2003.
