Mike Farris & The Roseland Rhythm Revue Kick-Off This Special One-Night-Only Concert

The 2009 Jazz series at the Hollywood Bowl continues on Wednesday, August 19, at 8 p.m. with two-time Grammy-winning soul diva Patti LaBelle, performing a selection of songs from her long-lived career. The evening begins with a set by soulful rockers Mike Farris & The Roseland Rhythm Revue, who make their Hollywood Bowl debut.

Patti LaBelle began her assent to stardom in 1962, when LaBelle and the Blue Belles scored a Top 20 pop and R&B hit with the single “I Sold My Heart to the Junkman.” It was not until 1974 when the renamed group LaBelle received acclaim and mainstream breakthrough with their song “Lady Marmalade.” After two more albums, 1975’s Phoenix and the following year’s Chameleon, LaBelle disbanded, and its namesake mounted a solo career. Patti Labelle scored a number one R&B hit with “If You Only Knew,” from 1983’s I’m in Love Again. Two years later, she reached the pop Top 20 with her Beverly Hills Cop soundtrack contribution “New Attitude.” Released in 1991, Burnin’ earned a Grammy for Best Female R&B Performance and 1998’s Live! One Night Only also received a Grammy for Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance.

In 2007, when Mike Farris debuted his critically acclaimed Salvation In Lights, people who’d never heard the former Screamin’ Cheetah Wheelie’s frontman were in for a surprise. In the two years since Salvation In Lights, Farris has performed in numerous music festivals across the country, including Bonnaroo, SXSW, Austin City Limits Festival, and Hardly Strictly Bluegrass Festival. Not surprisingly, Farris received the Americana Music Award in 2008 for New/Emerging Artist of the Year, bringing him recognition from fans and critics alike.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 42nd season. In January 2009, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the fifth year in a row at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
