Renowned Cellist Lynn Harrell Plays Lalo’s Cello Concerto in Tuesday’s Concert; Young Pianist Joyce Yang Makes Her Hollywood Bowl Debut in Thursday’s Concert

The Los Angeles Philharmonic, under the baton of former Associate Conductor Miguel Harth-Bedoya, performs an all-French program Tuesday, September 1, at 8 p.m., and an all-Russian program Thursday, September 3, at 8 p.m., at the Hollywood Bowl. Eminent American cellist Lynn Harrell performs Lalo’s Cello Concerto in the Tuesday concert, which also features works by Saint-Saëns, Bizet and Ravel. On Thursday, young Korean pianist Joyce Yang makes her Hollywood Bowl debut in Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2.

In addition to Lalo’s Cello Concerto, Tuesday’s program also features Saint-Saëns’ “Bacchanale” from Samson and Delilah, excerpts from Bizet’s opera Carmen and Ravel’s best known work, Bolero. The all-Russian program opens with Rachmaninoff’s Vocalise, followed by the Piano Concerto No. 2, and closes with Rimsky-Korsakov’s Scheherazade.

Since his successful tenure as Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Miguel Harth-Bedoya has led orchestras worldwide and is Music Director of the Fort Worth Symphony. The Cleveland Plain Dealer has referred to him as “one of the most exciting young conductors on the international scene.”

Lynn Harrell's presence is felt throughout the musical world. A consummate soloist, chamber musician, recitalist, conductor and teacher, his work throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia has placed him in the highest echelon of today's performing artists.

Critically acclaimed as "the most gifted young pianist of her generation" with a "million-volt stage presence," pianist Joyce Yang captivates audiences around the globe with her stunning virtuosity combined with heartfelt lyricism and interpretive sensitivity. At only 23, she has established herself as one of the leading artists of her generation through her innovative solo recitals and notable collaborations with the world's most prestigious orchestras.

One of the largest natural amphitheaters in the world, with a seating capacity of nearly 18,000, the HOLLYWOOD BOWL has been the summer home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic since its official opening in 1922, and is home to the best and brightest in all genres of music. The 2004 season introduced audiences to a revitalized Hollywood Bowl, featuring a newly-constructed shell and stage and the addition of four stadium screens enhancing stage views in the venue. To this day, $1 buys a seat at the top of the Bowl for many of the Los Angeles Philharmonic's concerts. While the Bowl is best known for its sizzling summer nights, during the day California's youngest patrons enjoy "SummerSounds: Music for Kids at the Hollywood Bowl," the Southland's most popular summer arts festival for children, now in its 42nd season. In January 2009, the Hollywood Bowl was named Best Major Outdoor Concert Venue for the fifth year in a row at the 20th Annual Pollstar Concert Industry Awards; the Bowl's summer music festival has become as much a part of a Southern California summer as beaches and barbecues, the Dodgers, and Disneyland.
