About this Piece
A frothy comedy of mistaken identities and practical jokes gone awry, Die Fledermaus (The Bat) was premiered in 1874 and has remained in the repertory ever since. At a masked ball in Act II, Rosalinde sings the yearning, then lively “Klänge der Heimat” (Sounds of My Homeland), an aria which Strauss cast in the form of a csárdás, a traditional Hungarian dance, as Rosalinde is pretending to be a Hungarian countess.
