Jocelyn Morlock in memoriam
LA Phil Etudes: Book 2, Part 2

world premiere

About this Piece

Canadian composer and conductor Samy Moussa composed Jocelyn Morlock in memoriam for oboe and continuo ad libitum. Titled as a memorial to composer Jocelyn Morlock, a colleague and artist for whom Moussa had enormous respect, the piece emphasizes the penetrating tones that an oboe so easily wields.

The work consists of three parts. The first section, marked piangevole (plaintively), is slow and melodic, making use of the oboe’s melancholic tone. The second section is quick; its triple time allows harmonies to peek through arpeggios. The conclusion is a shortened and altered reprise of the first section.
