Spiegel im Spiegel

About this Piece

Reminiscent of the ascending three-note arpeggios in the first movement of Beethoven’s “Moonlight” Sonata, Pärt’s Spiegel im Spiegel (1978) has become one of his most famous works, heard often in film and television. Originally written for violin and piano, Pärt arranged it for several other combinations, although the version commonly heard for organ is by Italian conductor and organist Giovanni Battista Mazza. The texture of the piece remains unchanged throughout with only minor deviations in register and harmony (always grounded in F major).
