Family & Community Support
Our sites offer families a safe space to convene, resources, nourishment, and connection, but the community that takes root there belongs to the families themselves. Increasingly, families are shaping the program directly: parent and family advisory groups now bring guardians, staff, and students to the same table, elevating family voices in the decisions that affect their young people.
Community Built Through Music
Some of the most powerful things that happen at YOLA were never on a lesson plan.
Parents who meet in rehearsal hallways and concert lobbies become friends, then networks of support that extend far beyond our walls. Families gather around:
- Shared meals
- Shared pride
- The shared experience of watching young people flourish
None of this is programmed into existence; it grows directly out of the music making itself.
When Community Shows Up
We've seen what these networks are capable of.
When families across our region were affected by disruptions to food and resource assistance, our center became a donation site in partnership with a local community organization, collecting goods for neighbors in need.
A building designed for rehearsals became, without hesitation, a resource for the whole neighborhood—because that is what it had already become in spirit.
A powerful reminder of the strength, care, and resilience that music-making builds.
Opening Our Doors
Our doors open outward, too, by hosting:
- Community festivals
- Open rehearsals
- Film screenings
- Celebrations for partner organizations across the city
- Free music-making in public parks across the county
What begins in a rehearsal room ripples outward into the neighborhoods our musicians call home—and the neighborhoods, in turn, make YOLA their own.
