Mentorship & Leadership
Learning at YOLA is designed to give musicians opportunities to explore their own voice and agency. Guided by Teaching Artists, Conductors, and Staff who serve as mentors and role models, young people discover what it means to lead, to express themselves fully, and to be accountable to a community.
Learning to Lead
Young people take on leadership roles within their ensembles by:
- Serving as concertmasters and section leaders
- Mentoring younger players
- Developing confidence, responsibility, and leadership through music
That circle of mentorship extends upward, too. Professional musicians, guest conductors, and guest artists regularly work directly with our young people, offering a living reminder that the path from student to stage is real and reachable.
Exploring Careers in Music
Leadership at YOLA also means discovering the many ways a life can be built in and around music.
Students gain hands-on experience through:
- Internships in music librarianship
- Live event production opportunities
- Workforce development programming that has carried participants into professional careers in the technical arts
Many have been trained in our own halls and now work across the city's biggest stages and venues.
Leadership Beyond the Rehearsal Room
The lessons reverberate well outside the rehearsal room. YOLA musicians become:
- Mentors to younger players
- Leaders in their schools
- Young people their communities can look to
The investment continues long after graduation. Alumni return to:
- Lead financial literacy workshops for their peers
- Organize career summits and showcases that open doors for the next generation of young artists
- Perform for and teach in the communities that raised them
- Send their younger siblings through the same doors they once walked through
Nearly a third of our alumni are now active in creative industries, many working alongside the very institution where their journey began—at YOLA.
