Every YOLA classroom is a safe space for expressing emotions and asking hard questions. Teaching Artists make room for the things that shape our musicians' lives—in school, at home, and in their communities—and help connect those experiences back to their outlet in music.
Building Confidence Through Music
Young people build the confidence, presence, and joy that carry them through every performance, and the self-discipline that becomes a foundation for expressing who they are, on stage and off.
Small-ensemble and chamber music experiences deepen this work. With no large section to hide behind, every voice matters, and musicians practice:
- Listening deeply
- Communicating without words
- Solving problems together
Music in Cultural Context
Because music is never taught in a vacuum, musicians explore the history and social circumstances behind the works they perform, developing positive cultural identities and the tools to understand the world around them.
In recent seasons this has meant:
- Creating dedicated ensembles for mariachi, big band, and choir
- Providing spaces where musicians sing and play in multiple languages
- Reflecting the traditions of their own families on the music stand
- Hosting cultural heritage celebrations where guest artists share the instruments and stories of communities our musicians call their own
When young people encounter music that reflects the diversity of the world around them, they come to see themselves—and their neighborhoods—as part of a broader musical story.
Finding Their Voice
Young people who know themselves this deeply show up differently for their families, their friends, and their neighborhoods.
We've watched our musicians carry that voice outward by:
- Publishing essays on the power of youth voice in national publications
- Speaking on public stages
- Standing at the center of some of the most significant performances our city has to offer—not as students on display, but as artists with something to say
A Foundation of Trust
One parent described it simply: in a time of upheaval for so many families, music became a source of calm for her children, something that "heals, calms, and liberates."
That is not an accident of the art form. It is the intentional result of classrooms built on trust, where safety and well-being come first and artistry grows from that foundation.
