As curator of the 2023/24 LA Phil season’s Pan-American Music Initiative, Ortiz showcased themes of Latina feminism and art as cultural protest with the Canto en resistencia concerts and throughout the inaugural California Festival. The latter included the world premiere of Revolución diamantina, a ballet score named after Mexico City’s 2019 Glitter Revolution, in which women took to the streets to protest sexual violence.

“I threw myself into the task of exploring thematic connections that had to do with earthly matters—with humanity in all its complexity, but from a subversive, feminine point of view,” Ortiz wrote in her program note.
