A Day in the Life
In 80 minutes, the journey of an entire day is evoked in a musical trek by LA Phil Creative Director Esa-Pekka Salonen and renowned director Yuval Sharon. A musical program that journeys between the seemingly banal and the profound—from the musique concrète of an electric toothbrush and the background music at a happy hour to a traditional chamber work conducted by Salonen—illuminates how sound and music shape our days. Salonen becomes an “everyman conductor” like Jaques Tati’s beloved character Monsieur Hulot, and in a similarly whimsical but melancholy way, the program invites the audience to ask themselves:
• How can one day stand in for a whole life?
• What is happening (and what music is playing) when “nothing” is happening? Why don’t we pay attention to it?
• How does music let us be in two places at once: our physical surroundings and the place imagined by the music?
A Day in the Life weaves a ritualistic cycle from new and familiar music, projections, and special staging that shine a light on the mundane, repetitive, and—sometimes—obsessive behaviors that make up our daily lives and highlights how sometimes even the most commonplace routines can lead to transcendent moments.
