About this Performance
October’s program brings together music by the Italians Rossini and Verdi, Spain’s Joaquín Turina, and Luigi Boccherini—a cellist and composer born in Italy but who spent most of his career in Spain. Turina moves the classic piano quartet into the world of Spanish folklore, while Verdi interprets the genre through the lens of Italian opera. The overture to the opera William Tell provides a sensational showstopper for seven cellists, and the famous minuet from Boccherini’s two-cello quintet offers a moment of delightful familiarity.
