About this Artist

red fish blue fish is the resident percussion ensemble of the University of California, San Diego (UCSD), and is led by percussionist, composer, and author Steven Schick. The group serves as a laboratory for the exploration of new works for percussion, regularly performing, touring, and recording works both locally and abroad. The ensemble has collaborated extensively with composers and performers in the UCSD Music Department, as well as professional ensembles such as the International Contemporary Ensemble, Eighth Blackbird, and the Bang on a Can All-Stars. Over the ensemble’s 25-year history, it has performed at the Agora Festival in Paris, Mexico City’s Centro de Bellas Artes, Festival Internacional Cervantino in Guanajuato Mexico, at the Tapei International Percussion Festival, and at the Miller Theatre in New York, where it presented the American premiere of James Dillon’s epic Nine Rivers cycle with the International Contemporary Ensemble. In 2011, red fish blue fish collaborated with George Crumb, Dawn Upshaw, and Peter Sellars on a staged performance of The Winds of Destiny at the Ojai Festival, where it was featured again in 2015. Among its numerous recordings are two important collections released with Mode Records: the complete percussion works of Iannis Xenakis and the early percussion music of Karlheinz Stockhausen, which won then 2015 German Music Critics’ Award for the best contemporary recording of contemporary music.
