About this Artist

Grammy-nominated conductor ANDREW CYR, a “prominent influence in the world of newly emerging music” (Washington Post), is a leader in the rapidly growing contemporary music scene. His passion for creating new platforms for outstanding emerging composers and performing artists led him to found Metropolis Ensemble in 2006. His work as conductor has been described by Esa-Pekka Salonen as “precise, rhythmically incisive and fluid. He made complex new pieces sound natural and organic.” Championing new work from the next generation of composers, recent engagements include The Melbourne Festival, BAM, Arts Emerson, The Colorado Symphony, Radio City Music Hall (as part of the David Chappelle Show), a new opera by David Bruce at New Victory Theatre, in collaboration with The Royal Opera House of London, and The Tonight Show. Upcoming appearances include Paris’s Cite de la Musique  and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Cyr is a native of Fort Kent, Maine, and holds music degrees from Bates College, the French National Conservatory (Etudes Supérieures), and Westminster Choir College. His primary musical mentors include conductors Dr. Joseph Flummerfelt, Kenneth Kiesler, and Kynan Johns, and organists Pierre Grandmaison, Marion Anderson, and Harvey Burgett. For his contributions to the field of new music, Cyr was awarded a Robert Rauschenberg Fellowship in 2014.
