A sophomore at Westlake High School, Aidan Vass, studies both jazz and classical music. On Trumpet, Aidan has held chairs for multiple years in the Ventura County Honor Band, All Southern Jazz Band and CBDA All-State Jazz band. He has performed at NAMM and at the CASMEC conference in San Jose, CA. He won the young soloist award at the Newbury Park Jazz Festival and was awarded a scholarship to attend the Idyllwild Summer Jazz Program for both 2016 and 2017. He has studied Jazz composition with Matt Harris (CSUN).
In addition to trumpet, Aidan studies classical guitar and piano. He has received numerous awards for his piano playing. He began composing in early 2017. That Spring, he premiered his first compositions - a piano sonata (Tide Pool) and wind band piece (A Blessed Touch). In 2018, he participated in the Sunset Chamber Festival Young Composer’s Workshop. Aidan has composed works for big band, chamber music ensembles, symphony, wind band and string orchestra. He currently studies classical composition with Brett Banducci. Aidan is grateful to his musical mentors Brian Peter, Mike Gangemi, Anne Fruehling, Frank LaGuardia, Nina Kelly, Mike Fortunato, and Ralph Ignazzio for all of their guidance and encouragement over the years. He is honored to be a part of the LA Philharmonic’s Nancy and Barry Sander’s Fellowship Program.
