Kathryn Shuman

About this Artist

LA based improviser, composer, and dynamic soprano, Kathryn Shuman, performs actively in studio and on stage as a soloist and ensemble singer. She has collaborated across genres with experimental artists including, Meredith Monk, performing in her opera Atlas with the LA Philharmonic, taking on the role of Coyote for Du Yun and Raven Chacon’s Sweetland with the Industry, premiering works of Juhi Bansal, and covering the lead role, Tasha, of Dylan Mattingly’s Stranger Love with Contemporaneous.

She has a passion for deep listening and sonic exploration, which can be heard through her use of expansive, extended vocal techniques, and microtonal singing. Kathryn’s compositions are often ecologically inspired and involve participation with/in outdoor environments. Shuman creates experimental vocal music for Splice, and has had work commissioned for installation, and live performance by Luminex 2.0, and Wild Up orchestra and Floating. She has performed her work at venues and festivals in California, New York, Ontario, Canada, and Berlin, Germany.
Shuman enjoys singing in community as a roster Soprano of the Los Angeles Master Chorale, LA Choral Lab, and an active SAG-AFTRA and AGMA union member.
