Day-Long Event of New Music Marks the Conclusion of the

Fluxus Festival

(Los Angeles - May 13, 2019) – The Los Angeles Philharmonic’s Noon to Midnight festival returns to Walt Disney Concert Hall, Saturday, June 1, for a third year following two previous overwhelmingly successful installations. The day-long event, this season expanded to include artists from across the country, offers audiences the most forward-thinking ensembles with pop-up performances throughout the various spaces of the world-renowned venue. In addition to the varied new music offerings, the season-long Fluxus Festival, presented by the LA Phil in collaboration with the Getty Research Institute, culminates in a Noon to Midnight intervention and includes five performances curated by Christopher Rountree and directed by Annie Saunders.

The day begins at noon on the Walt Disney Concert Hall Stage with the Fluxus performance of David Lang’s crowd out, a collaborative work bringing together hundreds of trained and untrained vocalists from across the region. Inspired by a soccer match in London, where he heard thousands of untrained voices swell, crest, and recede – at times in unison, and at times in total contrast with one another, the Pulitzer Prize-winning composer wrote crowd out as a way of framing how one understands the excitement, fear, and the  loneliness one feels in crowds. Choreographer Dimitri Chamblas directs and Lesley Leighton conducts as performers intermingle with the audience, slowly transforming the swirling babble and chatter into a stunningly orchestrated whirlwind of voices.

Throughout the remainder of the day, the concert hall stage hosts additional performances including: National Composers Intensive, featuring seven world premiere, LA Phil commissioned-works by emerging composers from across the country workshopped and performed by the International Contemporary Ensemble (ICE); chamber choir The Crossing performing the LA Phil co-commissioned world premiere of Toivo Tulev’s I heard the voices of children; Grammy-winning, Chicago based ensemble Eighth Blackbird in a program that includes the LA Phil co-commission of Pamela Z’s Ways of Looking; Rountree’s experimental classical ensemble wild Up; another performance from ICE performing music by Ann Cleare and an LA Phil co-commission by George Lewis; new and experimental chamber music ensemble Dal Niente in a program that includes an LA Phil-commissioned world premiere work by Anthony Cheung; and Santa Monica-based Jacaranda Music performing world premieres – an LA Phil-co-commission by Thomas Kotcheff and an LA Phil-commission by Dylan Mattingly.

Also on the Walt Disney Concert Hall stage will be the LA Phil New Music Group, led by LA Phil Creative Chair John Adams and featuring the Mivos Quartet in a program comprised of LA Phil-commissioned world premieres: Freya Waley-Cohen’s Changeling, Donnacha Dennehy’s Overcasting, Jeffrey Mumford’s …amid still and floating depths, and Christopher Stark’s Cascade.
 

Other indoor performances for guests to experience take place in BP Hall and include: the long running new music series Monday Evening Concerts with Philip Glass’ Glassworks; the L.A.-based Calder Quartet, Sō Percussion, the Lyris Quartet, Wasteland, a Fluxus performance of If You Will Forgive Me, an innovative take on John Cage’s Water Walk, and the Southland Ensemble. 
 

Noon to Midnight attendees can explore musical experimentation outside of the venue as well, starting in the rooftop garden. Keck Amphitheatre offers four presentations, including two Fluxus performances: the USC Percussion Group with Felipe Walker’s Teguala; a Fluxus performance of La Monte Young’s Piano Piece for David Tudor No. 2; piano duo HOCKET playing John Cage’s Two²; and another Fluxus performance – Patterson’s Composition for Any Situation.
 

Adjacent to Keck Amphitheatre, the Blue Ribbon Garden hosts Michael Gordon’s Timber, played by percussion ensemble red fish blue fish; the Sakura Cello Quintet in a program that includes a Michael Kaufman arrangement of Thomas Adès’ “O Albion” from Arcadiana; and the Mivos Quartet.
 

This season’s Noon to Midnight makes use of the rooftop’s seldom used Carson Amphitheatre and surrounding staircases with a Fluxus performance conceived by Annie Saunders in response to La Monte Young’s Composition 1960 #5.
 

Additional outside offerings include long-time staff member Paul Gibson’s Fanfare for the LA Phil 100 and contemporary vocal chamber music group Accordant Commons held on the venue’s Grand Staircase. Another staircase performance will be Fanfares 1969, a group a fanfares commissioned by two former LA Phil brass members – the work premiered June 1, 1969 and celebrated the LA Phil’s 50^th anniversary.
 

One of the final performances of the evening – David Robbins’ Ice Cream Social, a relational art piece that includes cake and ice cream for attendees – takes place on Grand Avenue.
 

The day of adventurous music will be accompanied by adventurous craft beer from throughout Southern California, including the LA Phil 100 IPA, brewed in collaboration with LA Ale Works and available from noon to 10PM in the Blue Ribbon Garden, and 8:30 – 11PM in BP Hall.
