  • Jul. 20, 2015
  • Los Angeles, CA (July 20, 2015) - The Los Angeles Philharmonic Association has announced the three conductors who will participate in the 2015/16 Dudamel Fellowship ProgramMatthew Aucoin, Adrien Perruchon, and Jamie Phillips. Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, together with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, created the Dudamel Fellowship Program in 2009 to provide a unique opportunity for promising young conductors from around the world to develop their craft and enrich their musical experience through personal mentorship and participation in the LA Phil's orchestral, education and community programs.

"As the seventh year of this program approaches, I feel very proud to work with these young, exceptional conductors from throughout the world," commented Dudamel. "The LA Phil's commitment to nurture the talent of future generations with firsthand training is a special opportunity that helps each of the Fellows realize his full potential."

The Fellows will work alongside Dudamel and musicians of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, as well as visiting artists and conductors, and will also work with students in key LA Phil education programs. The program for each of the Fellows will run separately. The Fellows will hone their skills through observation and application, such as conducting Los Angeles Philharmonic youth concerts at Walt Disney Concert Hall, participating as a cover conductor, and serving as mentors themselves through participation in programs such as Youth Orchestra Los Angeles (YOLA).

Matthew Aucoin (b. 1990) is a composer, conductor, poet, and pianist. Aucoin's next opera has been commissioned by the new works program of the Metropolitan Opera/Lincoln Center Theater. A 2012 graduate of Harvard College (summa cum laude), Aucoin was the Solti Conducting Apprentice of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, where he made his conducting debut last February; he has also served as an Assistant Conductor at the Metropolitan Opera.

Aucoin's third opera, Crossing, premiered at the American Repertory Theater in May, directed by Diane Paulus. His fourth, Second Nature, an opera for young people commissioned by Lyric Opera of Chicago, premieres in Chicago in August. Recent and upcoming performances of Aucoin's orchestral and chamber works include performances by the Zürich Tonhalle Orchestra, the Los Angeles Chamber Orchestra, cellist Yo-Yo Ma, members of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, violinist Jennifer Koh, pianist Benjamin Hochman, countertenor Anthony Roth Costanzo, the SOLI Chamber Ensemble, the Gramercy Trio, violinist Keir GoGwilt, and pianist George Fu. Aucoin studied composition with Robert Beaser at Juilliard, where he received a graduate diploma. He is Composer-in-Residence at the Peabody Essex Museum.

Adrien Perruchon (France), who will be conducting:

    January 23, 30, February 2 and 3, 2016
    Los Angeles Philharmonic
    Walt Disney Concert Hall
Toyota Symphonies for Youth (1/23, 1/30)

CITY OF LIGHT: A Musical Tour de France
In celebration of the LA Phil's 2016 French festival, the Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform a variety of France's orchestral music.

Taking over concerts at short notice, including a live radio and television broadcast is not an easy task for even the most experienced conductors, particularly when the orchestra is a major ensemble such as the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France in a prime venue such as Paris's new l'Auditorium de la Maison de la Radio. The events that unfolded in December 2014 when the young FrenchmanAdrien Perruchon was put in this situation left no doubt that we have seen the launch of a major conducting career.

His success last December resulted in an immediate re-invitation to conduct the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France. Perruchon will further work with orchestras including the Orchestre National de Lorraine, Orchestre National de Montpellier, Orchestre Poitou-Charentes, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Orquesta Filharmónica de Jalisco and the Cologne Opera for a new production of Don Giovanni.

While pursuing an active career as an orchestral musician Perruchon has collaborated with distinguished artists such as Daniel Barenboim at La Scala, Milan, and the late Claudio Abbado with the Orchestra Mozart in Bologna. He assisted at various European opera houses including Alain Altinoglu in Paris and François-Xavier Roth in Cologne. He is currently collaborating with Esa-Pekka Salonen at the Philharmonia Orchestra London as well as Chicago Symphony Orchestra.

Born in 1983, Adrien Perruchon started his musical training with the piano before moving on to bassoon and percussion. Appointed Principal Timpanist with Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France by Myung-Whun Chung in 2003, he also collaborates with the Maestro at Seoul Philharmonic Orchestra.

Jamie Phillips (England), who will be conducting:

    February 4 and 5, 2016
    Los Angeles Philharmonic
    Walt Disney Concert Hall
    Symphonies for Schools
CITY OF LIGHT: A Musical Tour de France
In celebration of the LA Phil's 2016 French festival, the Los Angeles Philharmonic will perform a variety of France's orchestral music.

Jamie Phillips, Assistant Conductor of the Hallé Orchestra, has already developed a strong guest-conducting profile. As a result of his success at the Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Awards in 2012, he was invited to conduct the Camerata Salzburg in the 2013 Salzburg Festival and the Mozarteum Orchestra Salzburg in 2014. With a clear, expressive technique and innate musicality, he demonstrates a natural authority and confidence on the podium.

Engagements in the 2014/15 season include debut concerts with the Deutsche Radio Philharmonie, Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Royal Northern Sinfonia, Mozarteumorchester Salzburg, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, RTÉ National Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Symphony Orchestra, Manchester Camerata and the Ulster Orchestra. Further ahead, he will conduct BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra, Residentie Orchestra, and London Philharmonic Orchestra, and make return visits to the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne at the Rheingau Festival, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Deutsche Radio Philharmonie and Luxembourg Philharmonic Orchestra.

Last season, Jamie Phillips made debuts with the Basel Symphony Orchestra, Orchestre de la Suisse Romande, Orchestre Philharmonique de Luxembourg, Helsingborg Symphony Orchestra, Hamburger Symphoniker, and the Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne as part of their "Découvertes" Series. He also conducted the Brussels Philharmonic, firstly in a group of New Year concerts, and then for his ballet debut with the Royal Ballet of Flanders in a new production of Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet by Slava Samodurov. Jamie Phillips also conducted the Hallé in subscription concerts at the Bridgewater Hall Manchester in two programs including Beethoven Symphony No. 7, and Tchaikovsky Symphony No. 6 and Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 3.

In the 2015/16 season, Jamie Phillips will become the Hallé's Associate Conductor, furthering the strong relationship he has established during the course of his tenure as Assistant Conductor. He is also Music Director of the Hallé Youth Orchestra and is heavily involved in many of the Hallé's education programs and concerts; last season he conducted 14 school concerts with the orchestra, seen by 20,000 children from across the North West.

Jamie Phillips is a committed advocate of new music and in September 2014, he recorded the music of Scottish composer Helen Grime together with Sir Mark Elder and the Hallé Orchestra for a release on the NMC label: "Performances are spot-on, not least from the orchestra's assistant conductor, Jamie Phillips, making an auspicious debut on disc."
