“Meeting a Force -- Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla makes a great first impression and before long she will simply be known as MIRGA” wrote the Los Angeles Times critic after her thrilling Hollywood Bowl debut with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in August 2014. Recently appointed Music Director of the Salzburg Landestheater with the start of the 2015/16 season and set to become Associate Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic in July 2016, Gražinytė-Tyla has continued to electrify orchestras and audiences alike. A Dudamel Fellow with the Los Angeles Philharmonic in 2012/13, Gražinytė-Tyla is the 2012 winner of the prestigious Nestle and Salzburg Festival Young Conductors Award. Subsequently she made her debut with the Mahler Chamber Orchestra in a symphonic concert at the Salzburger Festspiel. Last season, she collaborated with Gidon Kremer and Kremerata Baltica in an extensive tour, and made her debut with the Wiener Kammerorchester in Vienna. In 2013/14 as First Kapellmeister of the Opera House in Bern, she conducted new productions of Zero, La Traviata and The Cunning Little Vixen. Additionally, she led several productions at the Theater Heidelberg such as Aida and Carmen as well as new productions of Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Las Cartas de Frida by the renowned Mexican composer Marcela Rodriguez. Highlights of Gražinytė-Tyla’s career include an impressive debut with the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra in Birmingham, UK as well as concerts with the Danish Radio Orchestra, Copenhagen, the MDR Orchestra Leipzig, the Philharmonie Südwestfalen, Beethoven Orchester Bonn, Orchestre de Chambre de Lausanne, Lithuanian National Symphony Orchestra, Chor des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and the Kaunas Symphony Orchestra, as well as a collaboration with the Camerata Salzburg.

The LA Phil’s Composer Fellowship Program (CFP) is an innovative program that gives passionate young composers the tools and the freedom to impact the future of music. Founded in 2007 by Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky, CFP propels its Fellows to excellence through private and group composition lessons, seminars presented by LA Phil musicians, and encounters with professionals in the field. An intensive, two-year immersion into the world of composition, CFP has since grown to encompass annual opportunities through the Associate Composer Program and the ability for high school-age students who excelled in the two-year program to continue their studies through the Senior Fellowship Program. Graduates of CFP have been commissioned by the National Children’s Chorus, the American Composers Orchestra, and the New Juilliard Ensemble and have gone on to study composition at the University of Southern California, Harvard, Yale, the New England Conservatory, University of California-Los Angeles, and many others.
The San Gabriel Mission Playhouse is a magnificent and opulent theater steeped in history, complete with tapestries presented by the King of Spain, a beautifully carved and painted ceiling, a fully operational Wurlitzer Theatre Organ, and chandeliers that replicate the lanterns used on Spanish galleons which sailed around the tip of South America en route to California in the 1800’s. Dedicated on March 5th, 1927, this lavish facility was built by John Steven McGroarty for his famed Mission Play. In the mid 1940′s, a group of San Gabriel residents formed a citizen’s committee whose goal was to see the Playhouse purchased by the City. Although the first initiative was turned down by the voters in April of 1945, it was successfully passed in August of that year, at which time the City purchased the Mission Playhouse. Today, the auditorium looks much as it did when the Mission Play was in production. The architectural style is Spanish, with Mexican and Indian influences apparent in the decor. This Los Angeles Philharmonic Neighborhood Concert is presented as part of the Mission Playhouse Community Engagement Program Engage!
