The Los Angeles Philharmonic Gala is Made Possible with the Proud Support of Rolex, the Official Timepiece of the Los Angeles Philharmonic
WHAT:
The Los Angeles Philharmonic, led by Music & Artistic Director Gustavo Dudamel, launches the 2016/17 season with an evening that pays homage to the timeless sounds of the jazz era at the Opening Night Gala: Gershwin and the Jazz Age, Tuesday, September 27, 7 pm, at Walt Disney Concert Hall.
The special evening presents a concert featuring music by George Gershwin and contemporaries Duke Ellington, Cole Porter and Leonard Bernstein. Brian Stokes Mitchell and Megan Hilty lend their powerhouse vocal talents to the program singing classic solos and duets by Porter, Ellington and Gershwin. The two Broadway stars join together for Porter’s “So in Love” from Kiss Me Kate, a musical for which Mitchell earned Tony, Drama Desk, and Outer Critics Circle awards, as well as Gershwin’s “Let’s Call the Whole Thing Off” from Shall We Dance. Twenty-year-old piano sensation George Li opens the program with Gershwin’s “I Got Rhythm” Variations.
Also on the program are Ellington’s “Night Creature: Stalking Monster,” and Bernstein’s Prelude, Fugue and Riffs, featuring LA Phil Principal Clarinet Boris Allakhverdyan. The orchestra and Dudamel conclude the program with Gershwin’s An American in Paris.
LA Phil’s 2016/17 Opening Night Gala: Gershwin and the Jazz Age marks the beginning of the orchestra’s 2016/17 season. Single tickets are available starting August 28.
