  • LA Phil + The Music Center present Día de La Familia Featuring YOLA + Mariachi Los Camperos
  • Nov. 1, 2019
  • The Music Center Plaza
    November 9, 2019, 12 to 3 PM

Los Angeles, CA (November 1, 2019) – The LA Phil and The Music Center jointly present Día de La Familia featuring YOLA and Mariachi Los Camperos, a free community event taking place on Saturday, November 9, 2019, from noon to 3 p.m. on The Music Center Plaza. Emceed bilingually by DJ and radio host Betto Arcos, this family-friendly event will welcome the public to enjoy performances by YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) – led by LA Phil Associate Conductor Paolo Bortolameolli – and Mariachi Los Camperos, Los Angeles’s favorite interactive mariachi ensemble. This special collaboration between the LA Phil and The Music Center provides an opportunity to celebrate the 50-year anniversary of the Sister City relationship between Los Angeles and Mexico City, and will kick off YOLA’s tour of Mexico City alongside the LA Phil.

In addition to concert presentations, Día de la Familia will feature artmaking workshops for young people and families that include creating colorful tambourines with artist Ana Miro Herrans and decorating sugar skulls with artist Maria Elena Cruz in remembrance of ancestors. Storyteller and author Olga Loya will share a dramatic mix of Spanish and English traditional tales from Latin America as well as stories from her own varied and colorful life growing up in East Los Angeles; Loya’s storytelling will be presented in English and Spanish. Outside food is welcome, and attendees are encouraged to take public transportation.

“We are delighted to be working in collaboration with The Music Center to bring our YOLA musicians to its beautifully renovated Plaza,” said Chad Smith, Chief Executive Officer of the LA Phil. “Their performance will help to define this unique public space as a gathering place for music and connection, while also celebrating Los Angeles’ 50-year Sister City relationship with Mexico City. In the days following the performance, these same young musicians will travel to Mexico as part of the YOLA CDMX orchestra, and we are grateful for the opportunity to spotlight their accomplishments as part of Día de la Familia.”

“Families making art, listening to stories and enjoying music together is exactly the type of community gathering we envisioned for The Music Center Plaza after its renovation,” said Josephine Ramirez, executive vice president, The Music Center Arts (TMC Arts). “Día de La Familia on the Plaza is a perfect way to reflect the range and depth of arts and culture in Los Angeles, and of the rich variety of artists here that make it so special.”

    YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles)
Through Gustavo Dudamel’s YOLA (Youth Orchestra Los Angeles) program – inspired by Venezuela’s revolutionary El Sistema – the LA Phil and its community partners provide free instruments, intensive music training, and academic support to over 1350 students from vulnerable communities, empowering them to become vital citizens, leaders, and agents of change. YOLA provides students, from 6 to 18, with a strong musical and social foundation through participation in 12–15 hours of programming each week.

With YOLA sites in South L.A., the Rampart District, Westlake/MacArthur Park, and East L.A., YOLA engages students from more than 200 schools in L.A. County. Music study is complemented by leadership development opportunities, parent workshops, and performances. YOLA’s young musicians have performed on great stages all over the world, including the LA Phil’s two iconic venues – the Hollywood Bowl and Walt Disney Concert Hall – in many other locations throughout Southern California, on national and international television broadcasts, and alongside the greatest artists.

On August 15, 2018, the Los Angeles Philharmonic unveiled the architectural design by Gehry Partners, LLC, for its new Judith and Thomas L. Beckmen YOLA Center at Inglewood, the first permanent, purpose-built facility for YOLA.
