Program Kicks Off Los Angeles Philharmonic's New Holiday Concert Presentations At Walt Disney Concert Hall

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 4, AT 8 PM

    Sponsored by Deloitte & Touche

The Boys Choir of Harlem makes their Walt Disney Concert Hall debut in A Joyful Noise, a special holiday program on Thursday, December 4 at 8 p.m. The program kicks off a series of holiday performances at Walt Disney Concert Hall for the 2003/2004 season, which features a special lineup of holiday presentations also including a brass quintet, an energetic Gospel choir, Christmas sing-a-longs, and even a Klezmer ensemble.

In its 35th year under the direction of Walter J. Turnbull, the Boys Choir of Harlem (BCH) is internationally recognized for its virtuoso performances and innovations in the thousand-year-old art of the boy choir. The BCH is well-known for the breadth of its repertoire, which ranges from staples of the European canon by such masters as Haydn, Bach, and Mozart through the work of more modern composers such as Ginastera and Poulenc, to contemporary works from such artists as Bernstein and Hailstork. African-American spirituals, gospels, jazz, pop, and hip-hop are choreographed to give the Choir a magnetic stage presence that has won critical and popular acclaim.

At Walt Disney Concert Hall, the BCH will perform a range of Christmas spiritual and traditional choral selections including Bach's Nun ist das Heil und die Kraft, Poulenc's Gloria, Mel Tormé's The Christmas Song, Sammy Cahn's Let It Snow, and inspirational songs such as Glory, Glory, Glory to the New Born King, and Lift Every Voice and Sing, among others.

The special holiday programs at Walt Disney Concert Hall continue with Holiday Brass (Canadian Brass) on December 13; Oy, Chanukah (Klezmer Conservatory Band) on December 16; Sing We Christmas (Chanticleer) on December 18; Glory, Glory Glory! (Shirley Caesar Gospel Christmas) on December 20; and A Merry Mancini Christmas (Henry Mancini Institute Alumni Orchestra with special guests Debbie Allen, Michael Bublé, Dom DeLuise, Dakota Fanning, Gloria Loring, Monica Mancini, Robin Thicke, Diane Reeves and the Angel City Chorale) on December 23; and Pink Martini on December 31.

The celebrated BOYS CHOIR OF HARLEM marks the 35th anniversary of its founding by Walter J. Turnbull this season and is recognized for its virtuoso performances and innovative approach to choral music. The Boys Choir of Harlem makes several national tours annually and frequently tours Europe and Asia. The ensemble has appeared at many historic events: The United Nations 50th Anniversary Concert, Nelson Mandela's first trip to the U.S., the Statue of Liberty's centennial, and the 1992 observance of the 500th anniversary of Columbus' arrival. In 1997, they received the National Medal of the Arts from President Clinton.
