  • 12-Man Vocal Ensemble Celebrates the Season with Medieval and Renaissance
    Sacred Works and Caroling Favorites

THURSDAY, DECEMBER 18, AT 8 PM

The Los Angeles Philharmonic presents the a cappella vocal ensemble Chanticleer at Walt Disney Concert Hall on Thursday, December 18, at 8 p.m. The Grammy Award-winning group continues the Philharmonic's holiday programming with a concert featuring a selection of medieval and Renaissance sacred works, moving spirituals, and graceful arrangements of traditional carols.

With its seamless blend of twelve male voices, Chanticleer has earned international renown as "an orchestra of voices." "Chanticleer" is a combination of the French words chanter (to sing) and clair (clear). The eclectic program, which highlights the varied vocal talents of the group, includes the Gregorian chant Rorate cæli, a Spanish piece from the 16th century, Verbum caro factum est, Ave Maria by Franz Biebl, Ives' A Christmas Carol, as well as holiday favorites, Star of Wonder, We Three Kings, and O Holy Night.

The Los Angeles Philharmonic's holiday programs continue with Glory, Glory Glory! (Shirley Caesar Gospel Christmas) on December 20; A Merry Mancini Christmas (Henry Mancini Institute Alumni Orchestra with special guests Debbie Allen, Michael Bublé, Dom DeLuise, Dakota Fanning, Gloria Loring, Monica Mancini, Robin Thicke, Diane Reeves, plus the Angel City Chorale and the Debbie Allen Dance Academy Dancers) on December 23; and Pink Martini on December 31.

American classical ensemble CHANTICLEER has a reputation for vivid interpretations of a broad range of vocal literature. Twelve male voices, from countertenor to bass, comprise the group, which performs more than 100 concerts annually, appearing regularly in New York, Boston, Los Angeles, Washington, D.C., Chicago, Toronto, Tokyo, and Paris, as well as San Francisco, its home. It has commissioned numerous works from a growing list of composers, performing premieres of music by Mark Adam, Anthony Davis, Jake Heggie, Paul Schoenfield, Steven Stucky, and Augusta Read Thomas. Since 1994, Chanticleer has recorded for Teldec Classics International. This year, their world-premiere recording of Tavener's Lamentations and Praises was released.
