Despite being the only string quartet he ever wrote, Debussy’s String Quartet in G minor is widely considered one of the most beloved in the repertoire for its inventive approach to harmony, texture, and thematic variation. An innovator of another form, Victor Ewald made his mark on history with the modern brass quintet. His Third is particularly enthusiastic and exemplifies a robust Russian romanticism.

Jean Françaix’s short and sweet Quartet strays from the atonal music of his 20th-century composer peers, running free with amusing and unproblematic harmonies on a ragtime escapade. Madeline Dring, a musician-actor-mime-cartoonist all-star, also had a certain rhythmic humor and melodic sensibility about her work. Equally mischievous and brilliant, Op. 74 exhibits a happy-go-lucky conversation between oboe, flute, and piano.
